I am after some power tools for our refit and was told by our neighbour (he is a builder) to try and buy DeWalt tools as they are some of the best you can buy but not too dear.
However after looking at them in the shops they look mighty similar to Black & Decker just slightly different plastics and mmm.. yellow.
Problem is DW is usually twice as much as B&D so in the spirit of MSE I am asking are they the same?

That's almost double the price for the yellow one

Dewalt & B&D are part of the same company, the drivers do look very similar but there are differences, on has more torque settings than the other & more importantly if you are going to be using it a lot the Dewalt one has a 1 hour charger whilst the B&D one takes three hours.
Whether that makes it worth the extra money depends how you are going to use it0 -
As Vaio said B+D now own Dewalt (then now make nice shirts and trousers) but it depends on what work you need the tools for as some of the Wickes tools are ok for a budget build.0

Dewalt/black and decker is now owned by Stanley
For tradesmans/ Heavy domestic use Dewalt is what you should be buying. As a tradesman i will only use Dewalt, Tools get used everyday and i have just had to replace my first kit after 6 years of hard daily useHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
lol hilti if you are rich

I prefer green Bosch tools to B&D.Not in the same league as Dewalt but much cheaper.I have a sander that was used professionally for many years, the handle is worn smooth through use but its still going strong.I also have a cordless drill and jigsaw from bosch that I have failed to break so far.Whatever make you choose allways go for a free extra battery on cordless tools. When the batteries are worn out replacements can be very expensive and without one it is useless.0

Ive bee in the trade for 25yrs and have had most makes, De-Walt,Elu,Panasonic,Makita,Bosch,Hilti etc and I will ONLY buy Makita,Motabo and Hilti.
1: Makita Li-ion LTX range (Top Quality, inovative and will last years)
2: Hilti (same as above but bit over priced and you either need to buy from a rep or via website)
3: Metabo (Good quality, decent prices and will last)
4: Festool (Excellant quality, will last but way over priced)
5: Panasonic (Decent tools, nothing fussy )
6 : Bosch (pro range) (Always made decent tools at a decent price)
7: De-walt. (Prices about average,IMO Don't last, poor build quality and if you buy their cordless kits you tend to get 2 batteries, with the Makitas you get 3x3ah batteries(nearly £90-00 for an extra battery)....Lastly Maktias Li-ion Batteries are 3ah where as De-walt are only 2.2 ah.....0 -
