Why is everybody complaining about eBay's fees?.

I just think some people expect something for nothing,
  • try selling something at your local auction house/saleroom and see how much they charge you.
    Instant Credit means Instant Debit!

Walking to the pub IS exercise!
  • Ebay fees should be split between buyer and seller as they are in normal auction houses. as a buyer you pay a buyers premium so why should the seller be hit with it all? maybe ebay fees paid by seller and paypal fees by the buyer would be a good compromise.

Ebay and paypal fees are already paid by the buyer. Well they are if your a seller with some basic common sense and you price your items so they cover those costs. If you don't you wouldn't be in business long and would lose money.

Buyers seems to playing the "it's damaged, but not so badly I'll SNAD. How about refunding P&P..." angle. I guess once it's worked for one, the word gets around the pubs and clubs PDQ.

Any question from buyers that seems 'odd' should be instant block.

The last resort is to Google StreetView the winner's home address, and take a view if the "type" of person that lives there is really a plausible buyer of your item and cancel if needs be...

In a B and M auction house both the buyer and seller pay fees but the seller fees alone are still dearer than ebay.

Do you really want an additional charge levied on buyers as well? All that would happen is that you would have to lower your item cost to get the buyers.

Leave it alone, I get enough sales to make it worthwhile. If you want the buyers to disappear then charge them to bid...

People who buy your items are providing, or at least supplementing, your livelihood. They are not your enemy.
Some are scammers, but so are some sellers. Most people are genuine and just want to buy or sell the best items at the price the suits them best.

    .

A very good point and well made.

By over protecting sellers to the detriment of buyers all that happens is that you get a site like ebid where there are a lot of sellers and no buyers at all.

They are not your enemy - more like your kids. The level of intelligence is dropping in the country. Having sold an item, you would think that was that. Oh no. Sold a digital tv recorder six months ago. Message this week "the remote has stopped working". Buyer had pressed the tv button, used to control some functions on some tellies. Sat nav sold last year "I'm getting a funny message". No more details. That took a phone call, 35 minutes, on how to reload the maps and how to reboot, despite a manual provided. Loads of "does this work with, and is it such and such". Must be only me has google.
    We're all doomed.

I think in any retail enterprise you choose your product, and the customer base you aim to attract.
The way you design your listing and your shop will determine the sort of buyer you are going to get.

    Paraphrasing... if you offer peanuts..

I'm saying this because I'm doing a lot of research in view of starting a business on eBay, obviously I may be wrong, but I can't see why eBay should be any different from any other retail platform.

For example on the whole the type of buyers purchasing an old watch from expensive antiques seller through a well designed shop, will not be the same buying it from someone selling house clearance stuff with bad pictures and spelling mistakes in the description....
