Has anybody had a new boiler fitted recently?

Can somebody pleeeease help me, before I jump off the nearest high building?!! I am simply trying (in vain) to get one of the utility companies to tell me how much their combi boilers cost!

It really shouldn't be this difficult. My boiler is sadly defunct and I need a new one urgently (ie now). I have spent the whole morning on the phone to British Gas, nPower etc., trying to get them to at least tell me the range of costs. Every one of them wants to send somebody to my house and each of them has said they will get their "local" sales adviser to call me. British Gas could only tell me theirs started at around £1,700 and that's the only actual sum I've heard so far. I've not received a single call yet and, since it's now Friday afternoon, I'm unlikely to get a call now. I don't want a string of different guys coming to my house (not least because I'll have to take even more time off work), so before I invite anybody, I'd just like to get at least a ball-park figure, so I can decide where I'll get the best value. I've chosen the utility companies because I think I might get a better warranty and after-care service, so I am prepared to pay (just a little) more for that.

Can anybody tell me whether they've had a new combi boiler fitted recently and how much it cost? Any clues as to good deals with a warranty would be appreciated. Thanks

Try this website for help from qualified Central Heating engineers. You will probably be able to find one in your area who can do the job for you at a far cheaper price than British Gas - their prices are a rip off.

    util companies are most expensive.
most Worcester boilers come with 3 year warranty most other boilers come with 1-3 year or can be extended.

for a straight swap you will be looking at 1400-2500 at a guess.
The boiler will be 800 ish and installation will be ontop.
If a simple job you are talking 1 day.

If you want it cheap phone every gas fitter on the gas safety register near you. Sooner or later you will get one that is cheap.

They do not have to veiw the job, if they are any good they will give you a ball park figure or average price.(some will refuse to give a ball park cause they want the foot in the door for leverage, just tell them there is no point in wasting there time and yours)

With that figure you can get a proper quote.
  • we had a worcester bosch installed a year ago, its the middle range model and cost £1700 . its got a 5yr guarrantee for parts & labour, and was installed by a gas engineer local to us who is on the gas safe register=hope this helps

Good evening: more psychic quoting?:D No such thing as an average price (what is a 'ballpark figure?'...the 'game' can change with the swing of a bat/change of a detail).

Every installation is different hence most RGIs conduct site surveys so they can provide an estimate or quotation based on reality rather than nebulous details provided by the layperson over the phone or the internet and have no time for cod psychology. Timewasters are a reality for most tradespersons but those with experience can usually weed them out.;)

O.P....get written quotations from RGIs recommended to you by a source you trust and compare like for like. Remeha and Viessmann are just 2 manufacturers who offer 5 year parts and labour warranties. More advice on CH is available from the HHIC.

Btw...Don't purchase a boiler until you find a RGI who will do a 'fit' only....reasons for this strategy have been discussed many times on MSE.

All you have to do is look at the quotes that people have had on here they have a range and average.

A gas fitter has a range and an average

BG average price range will be one of the highest
Local gas fitters will have a lower average/range

Not psychic , common sense and maths.

And a point of reference to start getting quotes from. Rather than listening to flannel, carp and sales patter.

Like many jobs there are unforseen things that sometimes crop up.

If you are a gas fitter/plumber you have an average and you will also have a range.

And thats exactly what the original OP asked for.
  • Thanks Justjohn.

You contribution is gratefully received. I do, of course know the difference between an estimate (ball-park) range and a quote. The chuckle guy is missing the point here. Nobody was asking for a quote, but if I don't want every man and his dog coming to my house, then I need to know the starting price of their service. I'm wasting eveybody's time and effort if their charges are way too high to begin with.

    Thanks again.

Surely the difficulty is that there are so many variables.

Power flushing will probably be needed - does the property have 5 radiators or 30 radiators?

If an old system there can be a mass of expensive alterations that are mandatory to meet the latest regulations - the boiler could even need re-siting and changes to the flue made. New gas pipe required etc etc.

Is the combi replacing a combi boiler, or a conventional system boiler with a HW tank? Etc Etc.

There is little doubt that BG and the other Utility companies are considerably more expensive, but many will feel safer with a big company.

    Thank you. OP

Problems do arise sometimes. Our boiler was put in and a door was not bricked up properly and cost an extra 100 pound to fix. But the problem was just one of those things.

    .

    30 rads is not average

Yes there are variables. But the average house needs X.

You know BG is expensive because You have and average to base it on. Yes new gas pipe may need re-run.

But all you need is average price for the average install and you know you are going to get a good price for those variables you mention(and they will tell you and quote you for it when they come round).

These guys try to avoid this info cause they know if they can quote you, hassle you to find out others prices, get a foot in the door they have more chance of the sale.
