For music photos and wi-fi I believe there isn't any difference - except capacity.
I have the 8gb(a gift) and the only thing I have noticed is that my version cannot download home videos from Itunes(i.e. the PC).0 -
The 8GB is actually the previous generation with a spruce up and is best avoided as it won't run some Apps and can't be upgraded to the new multitasking OS. Better to go with the 32GB or bigger version - there are reports BTW that Apple are going to replace it soon with a 4th gen based on the iphone4, so you might want to wait0

Only the 32 and 64GB Touch's are 3rd gen. I've got the 32GB one with about 1000 pics, 2000 tunes and various music videos and I've still only used half the capacity. Possibly worth going for the 64GB one if you like watching movies on it.
As the above poster said though, might be worth waiting if you want an iTouch with a camera, it was apparently supposed to be on the 3rd gen one - maybe it'll be on the 4th gen?0 -
The current iphone 4 is just an ipod touch isn't it? I reckon by version 5 you'll be able to make phone calls too.0

The Apple rumour mill suggests there will be a new iPod Touch announced in September (and this would seem to have been confirmed by one of the major UK retailers accidentally including details of the thing in a Christmas presentation recently!
No info on what the new device will contain, but it's likely to have the same form factor and processor as the iPhone and will probably have a camera.
If you're desperate to get an iPod Touch now, go for the highest capacity you can afford - the 32Gb is probably the one to go for as a new item, as it will likely be a 3rd Gen device and able to take advantage of more of the iOS4 features than the 2nd Gen devices (as mentioned above, the 8Gb is only a slightly tweaked 2nd Gen and uses few, if any, of the new features in the OS upgrade).
The interesting thing for me to see if there IS a 4th Gen iPod Touch is, if it HAS got a camera, will it be able to take video? If so, then presumably there will be a built-in mic - which will make using Skype on an iPod Touch a whole lot easier for 'phone calls!

your 8GB device... do you mean iPod Touch 2nd Gen? If you can use Skype on it, how do you deal with the lack of built in microphone?0

Someone got it as a prize and gave it to me and it states it is a third generation I Pod Touch; it is a couple of months old. I take on board what is said above about it not having the full functionality of the 32Gb model. That said I have some apps I downloaded and they have been updated to the same standard as the latest I phone(or that was what it said)
I have plug in earphones/microphone which are an official accessory, the same I understand as supplied with the I phone.
I would need the same microphone to record voice memos, would I not?
In fact I find the voice memo facility most useful. Instead of typing out a long email - which takes me ages - I can record a voice memo and it has the facility to send it 'instantly' as an attachment.0
