I have been having connection problems with my broadband, it seems to have co-incided with a BB speed upgrade. I have contacted my isp who said it must be the router not the upgrade, I had a spare router, which surprised them, I connected it and it immediately worked. They insist they hadn't done anything but when I reconnected the original router it worked just as well. No problems for a couple of days but its been progressively getting worse. ISP are now suggesting it may be my Sky box needs an adsl filter or my BT phone line is not good enough.
Anyone any ideas?
BT are sure the line is OK, ISP are sure their end is fine, I have 2 routers which both work intermittently on my line. I'm now losing connection for days at a time. I seem to be the only one who expects them to sort it out and considers that the fact that I have had a phone line for many years longer than broadband to have any relevance. Surely it should be up to the provider to ensure their product is suitable for distribution down the phone lines?
Oh BTW work IT suggest its a synchronisation problem but who is responsible for that?

Is it a wireless router? have you tried putting a filter on the sky box?
If you are on 8MB, the speeds will vary for the first 10 days or so.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Who is your ISP?
Are you on LLU? or IPStream? That can have quite a effect.
Synchronisation would be down to BT/your ISP.
Basically, setup your router (or routers). Use a wired connection (not wireless), and you should be ok, basically try to eliminate any possible problems on your side. In most cases it's something to do with the ISP. The ISP industry is currently in an awful state, the user has very little rights and they'll often try to pass it off as a problem on your side. By revealing the ISP you're much more likely to get help.
You should be able to see what your router is snyc'ing at by logging into its web admin tool."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Is your ISP Virgin? I'm with Virgin - have been since about 1998/99 - no problems at all until they launched the 8mb upgrade. Since then I lose my connection every evening, usually around 10 p.m. It can be very difficult to get connected again, although closing the computer and restarting or leaving it a while usually works.
Virgin on line help suggested there could be something wrong with the wiring between the main telephone box and the extension I am using for the computer. But why only in the evening. NEVER happens during the day. I'm thinking of downgrading the package to the lower speed again.

I must be the least techicaly minded person on this site and I too experienced intermittant connections when my speed was increased due to change of isp (e7even to TT). TT spent hours going through their list of possible reasons, ie replace poor quality adsl cable, suggesting wireless router, move pc to main bt socket, etc. It then transpired that for some reason, the internal conexant modem had not been switched off consequently IT was competing with the TT modem. Once we had changed the settings in the machine, it appears to have solved the problem. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i had a similar sort of thing withmy BB supplier, i had to disconnect the modem from the mains and reconnect him like every hour, its ok nowNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Islandman, did you disable the internal modem? I've just done that, so I'll see what happens this evening.0

Thanks all for suggestions, it is a wireless router (forgotten about the others
)
I've put an adsl filter on the sky line (now have filters on everything incoming) and touch wood everythings ok tonight! If I get a few days/weeks with no problems I'll feel happy saying problem resolved!
BTW ISP is Freedom 2 Surf0 -
Lol, had problems with them myself before leaving back in May.
If the problems persist best thing to do is to get a minimal setup. One computer hooked up, disconnect anything else that is unecessary (ie Sky, other computers etc...). Connect the pc via a wired connection too, not wireless.
That way, when you phone them up it'll be difficult to lay the blame on your side. I did a similar thing with Eclipse recently, who "upgraded" me. In the end it was a series of problems, line sync problems and problems with throughput. It eventually got fixed though."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Lol spoke too soon, logged on this morning to check connection and its taken me several attempts and about 10 mins to get a connection! Will be speaking to the lovely customer support again and find out what the next stage of blaming me is, perhaps I've painted my room the wrong colour or have the wrong type of electrical supply?
Wolfman, in slight defence of f2s they did send out an email apologising for problems around about the time you left them! I still think they seem to be looking for ways to avoid admitting that speed upgrades are not very successful though.0 -

They used to be very good, but got taken over I think. Around December last year things started to get bad, and I left by May. For about the first three months they didn't post anything on their website, or inform anyone. It really was quite bad. Maybe they've realised they have to get things sorted before even more people leave.
Basically as I mentioned above, make sure you have the bare minumum on your connection, that way it removes the problem from being on your side.
Also ask them if you're on an LLU or IPStream connection. A lot of ISP's are moving people across to LLU which makes it very difficult if you wish to migrate away. Also I don't know if F2S have their own LLU setup, so you may be going via a different provider. For example I'm on Eclipse whose service is apparently provided through Tiscali."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
