Crikey, with demands like that, no wonder you find it expensive. A garden will cost you, as will the luxury of a spare room (I can understand wanting one - it's next on my list now that I've left London).

I was on Roman Road, East London. Really cool area and a great market. But it was a two bed flat with an enormous sitting room that we split in two to get a third 'bedroom'. No garden - if you really want one, I would look at zones 3 or 4 - more space, more greenery generally, more gardens available, less need to bankrupt yourself.

Yeah I used to live up there myself!

I like Roman area, tis lovely with the Victoria park etc.

Plus some great bargains on that market :D

But yes, too expensive there to try and find a garden, were in our 30s so we have got used to ( plus it is not fair on the doglette) not to have a garden- doesn't have to be big, but more than a small gunnell! .Its not a spare room we need, really just an office area where the bookcases, shelves, filing cabinet, printer etc will go. A small single or a office under the stairs type area would be ok I guess. I'm in the process of reducing it all down and scanning in paperwork so we can get rid of one of the filing cabinets, and we will get rid of one of the desks.
Will keep hunting I know something will come up :D

To be relevant to the thread though, what you're looking for is something more than what a student would accept.

you know what older you are pathetic no matter what i say its wrong, you may be older but you certainly are not wiser, in fact im sick of reading your crap. You tell me where the problem is, instead of paying rent i pay a mortgage, which is around the same ??????????????????
hmm.... adding to the ignore list

you can either look at advice from people who have been at multiple unis (and ONW works in careers advice, i think!) and take it for what it's worth, or you can just dig your heels in and refuse to accept anything that isn't telling you you're amazing or that everything you're doing isn't right.

(i graduated at the start of the 00s and i never had en suite - the change in requirements really is very very recent!)

That is also due to the HMO regulations as well :)

One of the reasons for the development of en suite rooms was the conference market, which is lucrative in the summer but requires higher standards of accommodation. However, it always amazes me that, at a time when students are supposed to be so hard up, it's always these rooms that are reserved first!

When you are living on debt you dont realise you are hard up until you have to pay it back!

Thats my experience anyway from the first time around :D

Where are you looking at the moment? I always look for National rail links, rather than tubes as it tends to be cheaper to rent in these areas. I live south of the river, although my uni is north of the river as from my experience the rents are cheaper.

;) true - but i was in halls for the first year which were not ensuite. although apparently they have now been upgraded as it helps them to rent them out for conferences in the holidays.... unis are not educational establishments, they're companies needing to make a profit (or at least to break even!)

Very true. Most universities are working the lucrative overseas student racket.

The rarified world of academe? I don't think so!

    It's sleazy and hypocritical.

    Why?

Universities have to make money somewhere. I'm sure I read that universities (or at least some universities) lose money on every 'home' student. There are also motives of bumping themselves up internationally so that they can attract more students and create possible collaborations with other research institutions.
