House settling, cracks etc...

Hi all,
Have agreed a price for a victorian end terrace house.
The house was built in 1881 and is on a fairly steep peice of road, I am aware of a couple of houses on the road having being underpinned in the 70's/80's.
I met our surveyor at the house and I asked about subsidence and he has tried to reassure me that it is settlement rather than subsidence. Small cracks are visible in the outer brickwork but you really have to look hard for them.
Although it is pretty obvious work has been carried out on the rear wall sometime long ago in the past (and maybe repointed more recently) that the house will have very little movement from now on.
The surveyor has scared us a little in what he has pointed out although he is paid to be extra picky and I fear we are worrying over nothing much.
The house has had 4 different occupants over the past 13 years so it would seem there has never been a problem selling it.
We are looking to stay here long term and have a family not just be in for a couple of years.
Has anybody got any first hand experience on buying such houses or any experts out there give any advice whilst we are waiting for a full report.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
