Diners Club

I have a few visa cards and mastercards, but I'm fancying a Diners Club card. Am I right in thinking these are not a brand like visa and mastercard offered through banks? You have to go to Diners Club themselves?

Anyone had any insight/experience of the application process or what they're like to deal with?

I also have an Amex card so am used to less than 100% acceptability of cards at retail outlets, but does anyone know how widely you can use them?

    Hi

Diners Club is now owned by Citigroup. And yes you have to go direct to them for a card. There is a £50 annual fee.

Application is by hand written form only which is downloadable from their website here. I can't offer you any insight I'm afraid.

Acceptance wise you may struggle, unless you like the finer things in life! It's a card designed for the more wealthy and as such will generally be accepted in more upmarket retailers, airlines, restaurants etc. Also, expect credit scoring to be harsh.

Is there any particular reason you are interested in Diners Club?

    Regards

Diners Club is a charge card (not a credit card).

Officially there are no pre-set spending limits and you are expected to settle the due balance in full.

What's the point in this card?!

I'd rather be paying on a cashback card in upmarket places and earning the cashback!

Ha! They even have music playing on the website that has an air of class (if you can call it that) about it.

Henrik, why not look at AMEX?

Second that. Look at the Amex cashback or rewards credit card. It is likely to be accepted at all the places Diners club is and is kind of exclusive like the diners club, and you get rewards and no annual charge. :)

However, I see that Diners allows you free access into airport lounges, which would be incredibly valuable if you're travelling a lot. A couple of lounge visits would justify £50.

Although not sure how happy my family would be sitting in Garfunkels while I'm sipping champagne in an air conditioned oasis. :(

Depends on country if the card, in the UK its owned by Citi, in the US it is owned and issued by Discover and new cards are no longer offered. Citi is royally fuked every whch way and it is barely surviving so it won't be long before they sell it.

Why have it? Free lounge access, the prestige that comes with the card i guess.

I do have a Diners card and honestly its cheaper to use that for lounge access than almost any other card.

Correct on all counts. There is a 3.5% surcharge if you don't pay the full balance every month.

Correct, Diners Club is a franchise and is run by various firms worldwide.

It's owned by Citigroup in the US too: https://www.dinersclubus.com/dce_content/aboutDinersClub

They carry the Discover acceptance mark in order to increase the amount of places the card can be used.
