I think that is a lovely idea :)

It doesn't matter whether or not they like cake / eat cake / allergic to cake ... the thought is beautiful and I would appreciate it far more than anything else :j

What do you think? Too stingy? At the minute it's about all I can afford to be honest.

    1. Is a cake appropriate as a thank you in this situation? What else would you do?

Cake is a lovely idea - they've obviously been so busy that they won't have had time themselves! I often give cake as a thank you, or sometimes jam/chutney depending on what is available.

If you are around when the fence arrives, do think it would be appropriate to offer to help erect it?
I always think that I might not be able to offer cash, but I can offer time - what do others think?

This is a gorgeous and easy cake to do and they will love it! You need a food processor though unless you want to chop up the orange by hand. Also it might need a trip to the shops - it costs £3.34 exactly to make but that doesn't include the cost of the left over ingredients. (Tesco's prices)
    Chocolate orange cake
    1 large orange
    6 eggs
    1 heaped tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp bicarb soda
    200g ground almonds
    250g caster sugar
    50g cocoa

1 boil the orange for about 2 hours or until soft.
2 when the orange is cold put it and everything else in a food processor ( if you have one). mix it all together then put in a tin and bake in the oven for and hour on 180c or gas mark 4.

Trust me it's delicious and fool proof!

Hi ana, that sounds like even a recipe I can't get wrong.

    Couple of questions
    1. Whizz the WHOLE orange? Skin and eveything? What about the pips? WIll Gladys want them back? Sorry, couldn't resist :D
    2. What size cake tin? I've dug out two round ones, both of different sizes, think one if a 7" and one an 8" which was why I put off doing a Victoria sponge - or is it a loaf tin? In which case I am stuffed. Does it matter?

    Thanks, Nix xx

I would love it if a neighbour was to bake me a cake, I regularly cut the neighbours'(on both sides) grass and don't even get a word of thanx, they just grunt at me and ask when I am coming round again.

So I go and bake my own cake....

Send them a mowing bill!! :rotfl:

I once baked fairy cakes and tomato soup (which was very hard to give away because my family love it!).which I gave to my neighbours as a thank you. They just gave back the empty tins a few days later and barely said thanks! So I didn't bother again. I didn't expect them to be gushing about it but they acted like they didn't really appreciate it at all! (I know its not my cooking by the way!:D)

Um...fairy cakes with tomato soup? or 2 separate dishes??

I'd like to try this, but does it really have no flour?
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Gosh, I remember making this one for a work 'do'! The ground almonds work just like flour, although it makes a heavier, more moist cake with a slightly gritty texture. Not good for people with nut allergies obviously, but I remember it being very yummy indeed.
