Speed Cameras

I have received a notice of intended prosecution from the local police for exceeding the speed limit of 30mph by a camera device. The road where this offence took place doesn't have any fixed speed cameras, but I often see one of those police vans with the camera in the back pointing at the oncoming traffic on the road in question. The alleged offence took place while I would have been on my way to work as it happened at 08.40. I was travelling towards the front of the Police van and not the back where the camera is situated so I can't understand why I was clocked.

Does anyone know if its possible to be caught speeding by one of these cameras from behind?

They work from the front or the back. They are mostly laser speed guns these day.

Ignore the morons who come in preaching about speeding... They'll get caught one day too :)

You broke the law. The time is irrelevent. Early Saturday mornings around here you still have people staggering home or the paperboys out doing their rounds.

It might not have been me driving it could have been the Mrs I can't remember we were both on our way to work and we are both insured to drive the car, so I will have to ask them for the photographic evidence (from behind) cos if it were me then I wouldn't want to break the law again by saying it was her would I? It could be difficult to determine who was driving the car, then what happens?

I think that due to a loophole/technicality/human rights challenge the issue of who was driving was debated in court and basically the the registered keeper basically gets the fine and points unless someone else is identified as the driver.

If I recall, some people refused to identify the driver as it was self incrimination and tried to get away with it, but eventually lost.

Aye, I think that you're right unfortunately.

Although I also remember a couple of politicians (can't remember their name) getting off on the same premise - that they couldn't remember who was driving.
  • Be careful trying the old it wasn't me ruse, a few years ago the taxi drivers around here were trying that trick and ended up in prison for perverting the cause of justice. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/beds/bucks/herts/6480005.stm

In fact some people are still trying it on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-10668027

some of the vans have cameras pointing out the front and too the side to try to stop people trying this trick.
