My GP arranged for someone to come out and see me. I had very similar problems to yourself, and the team from the local hospital came and saw me. To enable me to get out of bed/sit up in bed they gave me a mattress variator. Basically, it fits under the mattress and you press a switch that lifts the top of the mattress to wherever you want it. I find it brilliant to use, and I can put myself into a sitting position to enable me to get out of bed. Good luck, I hope you're not too long waiting and get what you need to make life easier to manage.

Some acute hospitals have an OT who works directly with patients who have R.A. Ask your hospital consultant if you are under one for a referral. This may be quicker than going through Social Services.
This is also beneficial as they will be able to make splints or provide you with working splints to stop you getting deformities of the hands. Social Services won't be able to make these splints. They will only be able to advise on equipment and adaptations.
If you do manage to get to see the hospital OT, don't cancel the Social Service referral that you made straight away as the Hospital OT may recommend that you have some adaptations. I would hate for you to have to start right at the back of the waiting list!
