I live on the outskirts of SoT (manchester side) and it takes me an hour and a half to drive in and park - it is another 20/30mins from my place into Hanley. It might be possible to shave some time off by dropping down to J16 M6, and using the A500, but still it isn't 'close' which is what I understood OP wanted.
However, Mcr to SoT is easily do-able within an hour by train, although parking is expensive unless the hotel has free parking.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
