This hotel is almost in the city centre, has a pool, £129 for 2 adults and 2 children

For a similar price you can book a family room at the splash landings hotel at alton towers (has a great pool, but is a fair drive from the city centre - depends where in SoT you need to be)

If you can get a budget hotel near to waterworld that might work out cheaper (check out the waterworld site for offers)

You could try the Holiday Inn 2for 1 as just pumped in a random date of 17 August to 19th August and it is £39.50 per night per family room that sleeps 4 room at the Holiday Inn Express in Stoke On Trent m6, jct 15 and it has an indoor pool, sauna and whirlpool.

  • Obviously I don't know what your plans are, but do factor in that Stoke isn't the city center- Hanley is. And the traffic in the area travelling between the 6 towns & Newcastle can be dreadful.

Bit misleading this, the HI Express at Stoke sleeps 4 but does NOT have a swimming pool, sauna or whirlpool. The Holiday Inn at J15 Stoke does have the pool etc. but only sleeps a maximum of 3 people.

We have stayed at the HI Express a few times and for £8 p.p.p.n. inc breakfast, using the 241 offer, it is great value for Alton Towers.

The link defaults to the U.S. but can be easily changed to the U.K. or any other Country using the drop down menu.

Manchester is certainly do-able within an hour on the train, as is Birmingham, but I think you'd be hard pushed to get from the Centre of S-O-T (say Hanley) to any of Liverpool, Birmingham or Nottingham by car within an hour - even Manchester would be a push.
