Get as good a panasonic as you can afford. Don't bother with LG, because their SD is usually pants and of all the display models I've had out at work, the highest number of failures I've had to replace have been LG.

There was one model last year which had an issue with issuing an ear splitting static sound at full volume, regardless of whether the TV was muted, or even displaying a picture.

As for whether to get a 1080 or 720 set, to me, a 720 set of that size would look horrible. Yes, they can display a 1080i signal (not properly mind) but you can see the gaps between the pixels, and diagonal lines look like stair cases.

If you can find a Panasonic G10 or v10, go for it.

    Otherwise, I'd recommend going with a 40" sony EX503.

Not sure what knowledge / experience you base this on but I have an LG and the SD looks great to me. I would suspect (assuming you work in a shop selling TV's) that they aren't set up properly... mine out of the box was poor but setting it up made it look great.

Also my LG is a 42" and 720p and looks absolutely fine... in fact better than fine.

    Very strange.

I am absolutely astounded by ANYONE who says that they cannot see the difference between HD and SD TV pictures !!! The usual reason for people saying this is that:

    1. They are watching it from the wrong distance
    2. They have a SCART lead feeding the TV
    3. They think that ALL programmes on an HD channel are in HD

I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma TV - SD picture is good, HD is excellent.

If anyone thinks there is no difference - YOU have wasted your money - I haven't !!

    1) Correct distance, 42" screen at about 12/15 foot away.

    2) HDMI Cable.

    3) All content on BBC HD is in HD I believe.

I have only wasted around £90 on my Humax Freesat Receiver, I far prefer the Freeview channel line up anyway.

    JUST AS I SAID !!!!

Correct distance for HD TV is 1.5 to 2.5 times diagonal measurement of screen:

If you don't believe me - Google it !

According to the chart below, on a 42" screen you only really get the full benefit of 1080p at 5 feet... who the hell watches a 42" screen at 5 feet.

I bought a Panasonic TH37PX80B TV a couple of years ago and it's superb. The HD picture (via a Virgin V+ box) is superb and the SD picture is also excellent.

Personally I'd spend the extra on the Panasonic.
I've got the 42" version of this and would second though my HD is via Sky+.

The only other thing I'd say is be absolutely sure that 42" is as big as you want. I thought it was massive when it arrived but now I'm pandering after a 50"!

I do ! Well almost - I have a chair at about 6 feet. It is an excellent picture on full HD.
It is just the same as reading a newspaper. You can read the headline at 15 feet, but the story is in "HD", therefore you have to read it from much closer.

I really do find it strange that people will spend large sums of money on something and don't have a clue how to use it.

Exactly, my TV fit's in with my living room, if I had to sit 5 or 6 foot away from it, I would get rid of it altogether.

How on earth did people manage with max size CRT's of 36"?

    My thinking too.

The room size and USUAL position of furniture should dictate the size of screen purchased.

I, too pondered a 50" as they are not a lot more expensive, pro rata, but figured that the pic quality would diminish and that a 50" would be too large for the room which is only 12Ft wide by approx 18Ft.

Fireplace Etc determines it's position and therefore I shall be watching my 42" from approx 8ft away - Like it or lump it.

The same distance, incidentally, that I was viewing my 32" Sony.

But you read the Daily Mail. So unfortunately you are a nutter, and not to be trusted. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
