  • i got an LG7700 from Richer Sounds not long ago, Freesat HD tuner & freeview (non-HD), 37", under £400, I'm usually a Sony man but like this very much for the (mainly) non-HD content I watch on it.
    Just my 2 cents...
    Friendly greeting!

Good price for a nice LCD.

Tv's seem to be offering less VFM compared to a few years back.

Panasonic TXP-42G20B. Built in FreeviewHD and FreesatHD tuners. You can add a USB hard drive and record to it as well. Good SD picture quality and can play back from a media server, memory stick or USB drive.

    For about £800+

Indeed. Quite cheap for a THX certified display with built in FreeviewHD and FreesatHD and which has been compared to the Pioneer Kuro, a £2500 professional grade set.

Get as good a panasonic as you can afford. Don't bother with LG, because their SD is usually pants and of all the display models I've had out at work, the highest number of failures I've had to replace have been LG.

There was one model last year which had an issue with issuing an ear splitting static sound at full volume, regardless of whether the TV was muted, or even displaying a picture.

As for whether to get a 1080 or 720 set, to me, a 720 set of that size would look horrible. Yes, they can display a 1080i signal (not properly mind) but you can see the gaps between the pixels, and diagonal lines look like stair cases.

If you can find a Panasonic G10 or v10, go for it.

    Otherwise, I'd recommend going with a 40" sony EX503.

    Like I said
A full HD set will be good for the time when everything is in HD. (Approx 5 yrs, I would estimate) but not required by most, for now.

Therefore my plan is to buy a £350.00 TV for now and expect to upgrade later by which time the resale value of said purchase will be nil.

And that assumes that HD will still be the format in use then.

Thanks but to throw away another £500.00 doesn''t make sense and this HD is blown out of proportion in my view.

Agreed, just buy the best Plasma that you can afford, don't worry about HD, it is grossly over rated IMO anyway.

I can hardly distinguish between HD and SD.

A good quality plasma TV will be so good at displaying SD material, that there really is not a significant difference from HD material, I did say that the same does not apply to LCD TV's.

I honestly believe all of this HD hype is just that, mainly hype.
