Taking hired car abroad

I am thinking of renting a car for a week in late August here in the UK and heading across to Normandy then driving up to Ghent before coming back to the UK.
How expensive would the insurance be for this? Would I be better off renting say at Calais or Le Havre and the ndoing a one way rental to Belgium?
