Water Leak Massive Bill

I was a tenant in a flat which there was a small water leak which was undetectable. the water bill came in over £1600.

when we reported the leak the agency in charge of our tenancy arranged for the leak to be fixed.

We have now been left with this bill which I feel is unfair as the landlord failed to provide sanitary appliances in full working order.

We have been trying to contact the landlord through the agency but will not respond in any way.

the agency at first were sympathetic and tried to help by looking into claiming on the insurance of the building. that soon stopped and they refused to help any further.

we have received a debt collection letter from united utilities but have delayed the bill for a further month, to be fair UU are a quite fair company to deal with.

is there any advice any has for us

Thanks

Have you contacted UU and told them you have had a leak ?

You can claim a leakage allowance for internal leaks now, try going down that route
  • Hi deanos thanks for your reply

My flatmate has been dealing with this more than me but they gave us another month to sort out proceedings so they must know that it was a leak

Where do you file for a leak allowance? With UU ? Thanks

Yes you will need to ring them and ask for a leakage allowance form, they might be able to process it over the phone

A 'small undetectable water leak' in a flat costing £1,600(less normal water use)

In UU area that would mean around 800 cubic metres - 800,000 litres!!

How long was this undetected? Even over a year that would be 91 litres an hour.

Hate to see a large leak!!

i am sure they will be able to show us how much there was,

the leak must have been there way before we even moved in so we got hit with it.

we didnt even know about the leak till about 9 months into the tenancy.

plus we already paid about £500 for water up to that 9months.

so a lot of money. the £500 should have covered the entire year!
