I have Psoriosis on my feet and ankles, drives me mad and is much worse when I am stressed or my mood drops. At night it keeps me awake and is hard not to scratch to the point of bleeding.

My doctor prescribed me Coal tar with Saylicit acid which is murder to apply but does seem to work. You apply and apparently rinse off. I don't rinse off though 'till the next morning (it does turn your skin black I should add-comes off when you rinse though). Not sure why it works, apparently its to do with stopping the skin cells multiply at the same rate. Not the most natural scented product either- smells like tar, looks like tar- its actually Crude oil which is what is in tar! But works and for that I am grateful.

Following that I was given some strong steroid cream which helped a little, but not much.

It goes without saying I did try a few natural and over the counter remedies first (Lush's Dream Cream, E45, Olive Oil, Eurax, E45hcl, Kiehl's Argan salve, Baby Oil, Fungal cream by Canesten for feet.... nothing worked- hence the doctors trip.)

I read abiut UV treatment but there are links to skin cancer so this put me off enquiring, however, the normal sun light seems to have helped my skin improve, could be a coincidence but I don't think so.

    hi jennie
ive tried coal tar treatments and stopped after years as coulnt bear the smell any more
also had uv treatment at the hospital in the past a swell as puva treatment which was effective,

the sun has always helped but this time and the previous flare up it didnt seem to work aswell,

    Another Vote for SELSUN.

I can't recommend it highly enough - it works for both my mild scalp (and eyebrows) and my husbands much worse scalp condition.

I used to use somethng I got a perscription for and hubby was perscribed becnavate which when ur scalp is up is like fire water and I used to have to almost force him to use it coz it hurt him so much when his skin was bad.

Selsun was brought by accident and we have never looked back.

    Good luck

thanx hot.chick it was nice to read that as i also have it right now on my eye brows between my eyes which is difficult as most treatments dont allow you to use on the face and its one place you really dont want it is the face as you cant hide it , good tip though if you use green concealer before your normal one its counteracts the red, not that i bother to use it much.
  • I have tried too many to mention here, but the link below is to a psoriasis forum - the link is to the alternative methods. 100's of ppl all giving info on alternative methods. Eating lots of good nuts ie brazil nuts etc is good for you as is vit B complex for long term relief

  • Hi Everyone,
I have just come across this forum, i used to suffer from psoriasis on my scalp but luckily enough my mum is a trichologist. For those that dont know what that is, it is someone that specialises in diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp.
I would recommend contacting a trichologist as they will know how to treat it the best. Its such a relief to know there is someone who can help and help you understand it more.
If you have any queries i would be more than happy to help.
    Good luck xx

Had it for years off and on and even been hospitalised with it for a month. That was a rather dramatic event where i had 100% coverage of plaque, guttate and pustular psoriasis. Went as quickly as it arrived and ended up clear of it for a couple of years after 6 weeks of UV treament twice a week.

It has been creeping back though over the last few years. I have been using Salcura Intensive for the last couple of weeks and despite my doubts it would do anything (been there before with several products) it does appear to be working with the redness and dryness being reduced dramatically. The 'raised' nature of the plaques has also dropped with the affected areas being much flatter. I have continued to apply my dovonex as well, after spraying the Salcura. The change was noticeable within a few days.

Think it is just a moisturiser with added benefits of forming a protective layer on your skin. It comes in a spray and is easy to apply and actually smells quite nice, a revelation for psoriasis treatments. Soaks in quickly too and can easily be used on your face.

I think you can get it in Boots etc. but I have been picking it up cheaper via Ebay UK. They do a whole range of products such as shampoo and shower gel, no idea what they are like though as I have not tried them.

  • Mine has improved greatly since I started taking Vitamin B12 to correct a deficiency and since I banished sodium lauryl sulphate from my life!

Before that nothng I had bought OTC or had on prescription had ever made an ounce of difference!
