One of the families I babysit for gave me a big bag of cooking apples this morning and said "enjoy". They in turn had got them this weekend from a friend (they'd been given three big bags full). I'm going to make them a crumble as a thank you.

Handed a guy my parking ticket with over an hour left on it, he looked at it like i had handed him a loaded gun.
Small simple acts of kindness are rewarded with a smile is reward enough for me.

I did the same thing the other week, had turned up for an appointment but been given the wrong date, used all of ten mins from a minimum of 2 hours so passed it onto a couple that were just arriving. Didn't get the same reaction as you though they did look a little shocked.
Seems to me people don't act in kindness as often as they could.

  • My kids wanted to thank the firemen for the work they do. I was completely embarrassed but took them to the fire station any way and handed in a box of sweets. The firemen all came out to thanked them and then showed them around the place, let them play with the hoses and sit in the engine.

One day they wrote a card and left a little notebook inside. It said on the envelope "this is for you, yes you! Pick it up and have a great day". We sneaked in to the toilets in a cafe and left it there. They enjoyed that, they felt like spies.

I've let people go first in the supermarket till if they only have a few items and I have a trolley load - they always seem shocked and ask "really, you sure?".

Random acts of kindness seems like a big thing in America and if you google it you'll get lots of ideas.

As I had a spare theme park pass i gave it to a random couple with a child in the payment queue
They asked if I wanted anything for it but as i had it done to me a few yrs earlier i was more than happy to give it away
I also try to give away any spare minutes on car park tickets
Like the film I think 'pay it forward' is something we should all do

I have given away my unused car parking time and i have also once paid for someones car parking, she hadnt got any change with her and this particular carpark you could pay with your card but unfortunately it wasnt working. So i asked her how long she wanted the ticket for and it was only 1 hour so i paid it for her.
I have also bought a homeless guy a coffee and a bacon sandwich before, he was quite shocked that i had done that for him. I have recently made some friends of mine some cushions for her flat, she loved them and was quite shocked that I didnt want any money for them. I am that kind of person though, I like doing/giving/making things for people. Little RACS sometimes makes such a difference to someone. My o/h was given some beetroot and so he made some chutney and gave the person a jar that had given him the beetroot, he also made apple sauce and did the same. He has given us some more apples so the next RAC will be a apple pie or a apple crumble.

    :D
  • Unused car park time - I will go out of my way to pass a ticket on, not just a RAC but on Principle - why should they get to charge for the same parking space twice in the same time period?!
Supermarket queues at the till, I`ll always let up to 2 shoppers who only have a few items go through before me if I`ve got a trolleyfull. I see this as simple courtesy, I`ve had folks do the same for me too. The only time anyone has reacted with surprise and almost disbelief was a young Polish woman in a Lidl I rarely shop at. I wondered if it was because she just didn`t expect this from `locals`, and that made me quite sad.

A lady reversed into my car in the school car park one morning. She was clearly very sorry. I was driving behind her as she reversed to straighten up in the space so there was a scratch which went along the front wing and both passenger side doors.

My car was already scraped in a few places and I was sure it was destined for the scrap yard at its next MOT as it was becoming uneconomical to repair. I just smiled and said I doubted she'd even knocked £50 off the value so forget about paying for repairs; I was keeping the car til it died and could deal with another scratch.

She was so relieved and I felt the warm and fuzzies :)

I love this thread and really think kindness is in such short supply these days!!

I love to hand over the parking ticket, and help people who look like they are struggle onto a bus etc (mostly old people) I always give up my seat even though I am pregnant to older people as a sign of respect.

I am due with DD #1 soon and cant belive how kind people have been with giving us bits and pieces we need for the baby, mostly second hand but I am absolutely fine with that. I plan to pay it all forward once she has outgrown the various bits.
Love reading the oldstyle board...always something to learn!

I try and do something daily. I give lots of unwanted stuff away or if someone is looking for a discount code on line I take time out to search for one. Always give parking ticket away.

Yesterday I was struggling with baby and nightmare toddler when someone offered to hold my baby while I sorted the other which I found very helpful and was exstreamly grateful of! (Was outside nursery where she had dropped off as I collected so trusted her not to run off with my son :)

You can't do the car park thing in our town as you have to input your number plate which gets printed on the pay and display ticket.

I have done other random acts of kindness though. Most memorable one was when hubby and I were sitting in the window of Subway eating and watching the world go by. I noticed an old homeless lady over the road, sitting on the ground by a shop. As I was eating, I was thinking to myself, "After we've had this, I'll say to hubby that I want to buy that lady some food and a hot drink." Then hubby piped up and said exactly the same!

She was surprised but very grateful.
