Welsh trip..advice/guide

Hi
We (couple) are planning on going round Wales by Car in the next couple of weeks taking in the main sights.
Would anyone be able to advise on what is a must see/ or not see :) I am also interested in the road links between the various sites in Wales..
And the local cuisine :)

  • Big place is Wales....!!!!!
Maybe you could give us an idea which area you are intending to visit then we can help you better.
  • There are some beautiful parts in Wales, depending what you route you take-
The costal route from South toMid Wales is lovely-Start at Cardiff Bay-taking in ST Fagans Museum(Free) then onto The Gower and the Mumbles-take the costal road all the way up to Aberystwyth- places to call would be-
    Pembrey Country Park,Llanelli-lovely beach,
    Amroth,
    Barafundale Bay-outstanding-but a bit of a walk,
    Tenby Harbour-
then just follow the costal road-there are some beautiful stops all the way up to Aberystwyth.

The only decent fast road in Wales is the M4, the A5 across north Wales isn't too bad - north to south roads aren't too good if you want to get anywhere very quickly, but slower roads mean you can enjoy the trip.

Local cuisine - Welsh cakes, cawl, bara brith, lava bread, curry but with half and half!

Thanks for the feedback! We are still in the exploratory stages but have pencilled in Cardiff -other half wants to do the castle.
Snowdonia looks good -not too sure if its packed during the summer though.
Am travelling from close to Cambridge -so its going to be a long trek :) Was looking at doing a loop around the Welsh Peninsula... Though over a long wknd Friday-Sunday am not how much can be really covered.

The A55 is used now cos its a dual carriage way. A5 is the slow scenic route.

    Sorry I missed a '5' off the A55!
  • you'll be lucky to do Cardiff AND snowdonis in a long weekend (as that's how i've read your message)
cardiff -castle, open top bus tour, st fagans, castell coch, caerphilly castle, millenium stadium tour, cardiff bay water bus or land train
Snowdonia region - Snowdon train (very busy, may not run in poor weather) or walk up, Caernarfon castle, Portmerion village,
roads are pretty poor too be honest. It'll take you 4 hours perhaps to travel by road from south to north wales. The A470 gets pretty busy and is just a normal A road with little opportunity to pass in some areas and you are bound to get stuck behind a HGV (give my husband a beep if it's a green and white one!), a tractor (give my dad a beep if it's an old red one!) or a caravan (don't know anyone with a caravan!!!).

If it's castles you want to seee head to north wales as there are a lot up there or to south east wales where there are a lot too.
As people have said, wales is a big place. I'vwe always lived here and we still like holidaying in the areas we haven't visited in the past - there's always something to see or do

Oh & may the Lord help you if get stuck behind a lorry carrying logs.....it'll take twice the time.

Castell Coch is shut following a drawbridge collapse, isn't it?

There are awful roadworks around Cardiff castle at the moment too - be warned!

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Have finally decided to stick to Cardiff and surronding areas. As we are travelling Friday evening -hope to be in Cardiff about 10pm to start early on the Saturday :)
Would anyone be able to recommend good B&B's around that area... As am a big fan of trying local food -one that does good Brekkie with local produce would be fab!
