have you tried the 'try Ubuntu' option to boot up, instead of the install ubuntu?Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Hi Guys
Sorry its taken ages to respond. Anyway still having problems with this - got into the BIOS and saw that the CD drive was the primary boot, but I when I insert my windows setup CD and boot up it churns for a bit but nothing really happens and windows starts up again. Nothing wrong with CD as I have tried in other computer.
Is there some sort of other boot cd/floppy disk I could use as this is getting a bit frustrating !!!
Cheers
Hi, so you HAVE already got to the BIOS, yes? - so why are you opening the PC?
You cannot disable the Windows password by opening the case and resetting anything - thats only for the BIOS (ie. pressing F10 at switch on) - which you say you CAN get access to (i.e. CD is boot device). So we are past any messing with the BIOS.
If one particular CD (ie. your XP boot CD) wont boot but others will (Ubuntu) then the CD maybe borderline - meaning it boots from some CDs but not others - its not unusual in a 7 year old PC.
Open the CD drive and give it a good blow. Also make sure it is a CD and not a DVD you are booting from as none of those models had DVD drives if I remember.
Can you tell us what is the actual CD (if it is a CD) that you are using? ie. an original HP restore CD set (they will be red disks) of just a vanilla XP install CD etc??0 -

Sorry I have had to post again............made some progress !!!! (ish)
Popped in my windows CD and it went to setup...........yes!!! Then once it rebooted and went into the bit where it talks about the 'benefits' of XP came up with an error saying file 'asms' could not be found. installation terminated. Damn.
Tried again. Same thing. Burned new CD at slower rate....same thing. I know the ASMS folder is ther as I can see it. Then looked about on the net and someone suggested that I should just burn the ASMS folder to a CD and you can pick your location of later on in the installation..........tried that with no luck!!!
Tearing my non exiting hair out here!!!!!
Any other suggestions?0 -
The CD drive on that PC is at least 7 or 8 years old so is having issues with reading some CDs.
Just swap it out for another CD drive - available Free from any old PC of that era - everyone has an old PC somewhere - just ask a friend. Or I have stacks here!
Its easy to change - open the case (if you have managed it now) and the dive bay flips upward - disconnect 2 leads (data and power) and the drive can be slid out - you have to hold a tab out to release it - it has a little picture showing how its done.
Then install new one and try the boot again!0 -
