"Press a key to boot from CD within 5 sec ..." or similar? - nope there is no such message that pops up

This is what I get if I insert my XP CD. Maybe the CD drive is faulty or has problems reading the media of the copy of XP...

Did you try any other bootable CD?

my personaly preference is ubuntu - yes it isnt windows, but if all else fails and this works you should be able to get a working operating system installed
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

As gonzo said, Ubuntu for instance. Even if you don't want to install it, you could boot from it and use GParted to delete all partitions. Then your XP might boot as there are no bootable partitions left.

So you're saying that it booted from CD. That means the drive is ok.

As for the rest, I don't know what you did. You boot from the Ubuntu CD until you come to the point where you have the choice between installing and trying. Chose "Try Ubuntu" and wait for it to finish booting. Then you click on System -> Administration -> GParted and delete all partitions.

As per Donnie's post it does indeed have one of these, go grab a screwdriver and get that case open.... foreign or otherwise its very easy and no time like the present to learn.

(I can gurantee your problem will be very difficuly if not impossibly to solve without fiddling inside it at some point)
