I guess that would depend on the cost and features versus exclusions.

But in the past the general consensus about most "extended warranties" and similar schemes is that they have poor cover and many exclusions with a high price. IIRC the only ones that are considered even remotely worth having are the ones that Richer Sounds offer (but they obviously don't sell what you want to buy!).

This seems a good deal....just noticed that it is only if you buy from Amazon. So check their prices too.
  • Never taken out any insurance on any camera (had lots of digi cams) .. none have ever broken down.. even my old Canon Ixus which got rather wet still works (although the LCD is now a bit rubbish).

Without physical mistreatment, they rarely break.

    Product Features
Extended Warranty, provided by Allianz Insurance plc (we, us, our), offers you the following protection:
Breakdown cover for your product following the expiry of the manufacturer’s guarantee
Accidental damage cover from day one for the duration of the policy
For example, a 5-year warranty will provide 5 years of accidental damage cover and 4 years of breakdown cover, in the case the product has a 1-year guarantee from the manufacturer
If the product breaks down outside of the manufacturer’s guarantee or is damaged, it will be repaired; if it can’t be repaired, we will provide a cash settlement for replacement
The policy is subject to terms and conditions as well as some exclusions and limitations applying: for example, cover will not apply to normal wear and tear of the appliance or damage caused by not following the manufacturer’s instructions

I agree extended cover is good, depending upon company

I bought a recon Fuji dig cam from Fuji, worked fine for a few years, then the image CCD went duff [known fault apparently].

Fixed and returned in 48 hours, well worth the policy premium [around £50 at the time], which also, like the Amazon one, provided accidental damage cover

You just never know when the neck strap may break, come undone, etc

I guess it's apparent from the above that opinions vary.

I prefer to cover off the possibility of accidental damage via a "replace with new" policy on my house insurance, because it covers ~everything~ that I take out of the house - not just a camera. This is (IMO) much more cost-effective than getting lots of separate policies for individual items.

For faults, I rely on the standard warranty and then my rights under the Sale of Goods act.

Pointless on a new camera, which will come with (at least) a one year warranty anyway. Consider it when that runs out, but never buy the ones flogged by DSG in their shops as they're invariably twice what you will pay if you buy independently.

    This is just terrible advice.

Only if you are in the habit of dropping your cameras, in which case the best option is to cover it via your home insurance 'personal belongings outside the home', as fwor rightly suggested. By coincidence I did just that today and got £2,500 of cover for £25.

Unless you are suggesting that DSG extended warranties offer good value, in which case I have to question your sanity.:D

IMO extended warranties are generally unnecessary, just a scheme dreamt up by retailers to extract more cash from the customer.

FWIW it looks as though you can currently get a TZ10 for a bit less that a Currys TZ9:
