Communal Sky in Flat - Cost High! What to do?

I have recently moved in to a 1 bed flat in an apartment complex (there are about 12 flats), and I am looking to set up sky. I have rang up the communal team (AVG UK is my local one apparently) but it seems a bit pricey. How much should I expect to pay and are there any cheaper options out there?

Here is what I am after:
Unlimited Broadband, as I use the internet regularly and stream videos
Sky TV basic with sports package and news.
Phone line is not necessary, but with the internet I know you have to take out a sky phone line, I would take the weekend and evening calls (as I have a mobile and don't use a landline).

Sky have quoted me as £56 a month and £30 installation.

I have never gotten sky before but this seems quite high? Why do I have to pay installation as the satellite has been installed, and the socket in my flat has slots for sat1, sat2, internet, phone and tv?

Is there anyway I can talk them down? Or any other provider?

I have spoken to an advisor online who was quite nice and gave a better deal but she would not speak to me after she realised I had a communal line, she told me that I would have to speak to the communal team.

My landlord will not allow me to put a dish up on the property!

  • Did they not break down the costs for you?

The TV package is around £36, half of which is just for the Sports.

The broadband price will depend on whether your exchange has Sky LLU or if you're using the Sky connect service.
    Dave.
  • That price sounds right...

    2 mix with sports = £37
sky talk line rental = £11
    sky broadband unlimited = £7.50

    Total = £55.50

Further to my post, I opened up The Sun yesterday to find that Sky is doing an offer for Sky TV with Sports 1 & 2, Talk Talk Weekend and Evening calls, and Broadband (Everyday Light) for £36 valid until August 25, made especially for flats. The title reads 'Get Sky in Your Flat for £36 per month'. I am going to give them a call to see what that's about. I reckon with upgrading the broadband to unlimitted it will still be cheaper!

    What do you guys' think?
  • That price doesn't include line rental, if you read the small print it will say "BT or Sky Talk Line Rental not included" or something along those lines. Sky Talk line rental is £11 per month, not sure what BT charge. So add £11 onto that price and it will be £47 per month.

Yep, I soon found that out. With the line rental, and with upgrading my internet to unlimited (I stream and download quite a lot) that took it to £54, which was £2 cheaper than first offered - and included free installation. I guess I just have to grin and bear it - there doesn't seem anyway around it, except for not having sky tv - and I would like that luxury so will have to pay for it I guess!
