How big is your Chain?

I am in a chain of 10 which seems quite big and is a slight concern to me. Do chains get much bigger than this?

  • We're in a chain of four, with us at the bottom as first time buyers. It's been hard enough work with just four people having to come to an agreement on dates, I hate to imagine what it would be like with ten

I'm in a chain of four - it's the largest chain I've ever been involved in and it's a "beeping" nightmare. 6 months and another anticipated exchange date of yesterday been and gone. We've had to move once already to stop another sale falling through.

10 really is a lot. Where are you in that chain? To be completely honest, I'd be looking for either a new buyer or a new house, depending on which end is shorter. The absolute worst thing about house buying and selling is where you just don't know what's going on - and that's exactly what happens in a chain.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • I'm number nine in the chain. Originally, we were told we had a cash buyer who we waited and waited on to see proof of funds. It has now emerged, that our buyer has sold their property and wants to use the funds from that instead.

Feel slightly deceived, but we do have a buyer at least.
  • Longest chain I have had was 7. That was plenty long enough. It took us a week of constant phoning just to get all the parties to agree to the completion date!
Chains are one of the worst things about property transactions.

Make sure you are calling your EA and solicitor at least once a week to ensure everything is ticking over and that there are no problems. Your EA selling your property has a duty of care to you to make sure he tells you the current situation and of any problems that might crop up.

We were in a chain of 4,which then suddenly turned into a chain of 5,lots of problems even with a small chain and now it has reformed and is a chain of 6!!!
It has been ongoing for 6 long months already and a few more to go.I will probably never want to move again with a chain.
    Good luck
  • I've never bought or sold into a chain.

Our family home in the UK, which we bought in 1976 and still own, was empty and we were first time buyers coming from a council flat.

We paid most of the money towards my MIL's RTB bunglaow, so no chain there. We sold it after my husband inherited it to someone who was renting.

Our investment flat was empty and we didn't need to sell anything, as we got a mortgage. We eventually sold it to someone else who was buying as an investment, so again no chain.

Our house in Spain was a Spanish family's holiday home, so they didn't need to sell and we paid cash.

I can't imagine how stressful it must be to be in ANY sort of chain.

When you say you are ninth, is that near the bottom or near the top?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I have a chain of eight below me. Enough to freek anyone out.

Ah. So the person before you in the chain is not likely to be a first time buyer or in a position to pay cash. So it's didfficult for you to pull out unless you buy another house

Hope it all goes well for you!

number 1 (FTB) in our chain dropped out and the chain was going to grow to 6 or 7. We jumped in and became position 1 and 4! positions 2 and 3 were very grateful. 5 thought we were all a bit mad.
