I am going to Canada in 2 weeks, and i am wondering what the best card or prepaid card is to use. is travelex any good - but im having problems buying online and the thomas cook version of the card charges for atm withdrawls whereas the travelex doesnt? I have HSBC and RBS debit cards and a halifax credit card are any of them good to use. its so confusing!

The new Halifax clarity credit card would be a very good option - for cash withdrawals as well as purchases. The other Halifax cards have hefty charges. Of the prepaid cards Caxton or Fairfx are the best options, but you are leaving things rather late. See the guide here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money0

Your HSBC card is reasonable as debit cards go
Getting anything else in the time available (other than an over the counter prepaid card, which have high charges) is rather iffy. It might work, but can't be relied upon0 -
Likewise, I am travelling to Canada in 2 weeks. I do realise this is late in the day but I'm no financial wizard (and haven't been abroad in nearly 20 years!!) and hadn't realised that there could be such high charges for cards abroad. I don't want to take all our money in cash - I have a TESCO credit card and a Capital 1 credit card - are either of these any good for Canada? Or would I be better getting a debit card?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!0 -
Hi OP,
The Halifax Clarity Card is excellent. I would try to use it as much as you can, though do have back-up(s) in case it is refused or blocked.
Shazbat, I would agree with apt and direct you to the article on the main site: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money It is maybe getting a bit late to organise a new credit or debit card now so you may need to optimise what you already have.
Hope you both enjoy your time in Canada. It is lovely!
