to not get junk email in hotmail just don't sign up for any of them email newsletters when you create a account.

If you do thats how the majority of the junk emails get your email address, by the email newsletter companies selling on your email addresses.

I wonder how true that is, 99.9% of the spam I get haven't found my email addresses from anywhere they are just speculative to my domains that I own.

  • I talking about hotmail email accounts rather than other email addresses.

I know this is a fact I did read a article about it and M$ agreed with this fact, plus I tried it with a account I created and use and I don't get any junk mail other than the msn/hotmail newsletters which has to be seen as a given for the hotmail accounts.

Another thing is I don't sign up to alot of websites or rmail lists with that address which probably helps. though accounts just signed up to the email news letters that hotmail offers and it is a free for all.

I did not check any of the options for newsletters and she has not posted her email address anywhere yet as it was only set up yesterday. Read her mail today and 11 !!!!!! emails:eek:

I went into the options box and have limited mail to her address book now.

So these newsletters (I can't check myself I don't want a hotmail account, I've already got hundreds of email addresses I can use) are they MS's own newsletters? And do they pass your information on without permission? If so then it's illegal.

  • no they are third party or at least they where, I haven't created a new account in years so I am not sure what news letter emails they are offering. plus I believe they were just passing on your email address rather than other details like your name.

Even passing on email addresses without permission is still illegal under CAN-SPAM Act for USA, Data Protection Act, UK and Privacy and Electronic Communications directive, EU. I know that whenever I create a gmail account, there is always spam without registering the address with anyone so it wouldn't surprise me if hotmail accounts can get a lot of junk mail even without signing up to these newsletters.

  • as I said it has been years since I have set up a hotmail account, but the spam filters are off and I never recieve any spam from anywhere but the msn/hotmail stuff, I don't get any spam through my gmail account either, so wether it is just a pure fluke or not I am not sure but their was a thing about signing up to email news letters on hotmail account sign up. I do get tons of spam with other email addresses I have but they are usually isp run email address, my domain email address never gets any spam either.

That's why I stick to just using my domain, except I give everyone a unique email address and have everything forwarded, so I get all the rubbish such as sales@ and accounting@ etc but I can track anyone who passes on my email address by looking at which address it was sent to. It's been very effective so far, I've only had one main problem with Aria Technology passing on my address to phishers but everything else is fine.
