My ISP is via AOL 9. I did have IE5.5 (I think!) and I
downloaded update to IE6 so DD can have MSN messenger. I have had hotmail for years and access this through Outlook Express. Anyway download seemed fine and it asked me to restart computer. When I did this I had the
error message:
updating files
unable to update files from 1% to 2%.
After 2 hours new message of continue to load windows ENTER windows may
not load properly. Windows did load properly but I still don't have
messenger.
I get LOGON TO MESSENGER SERVICE FAILED BECAUSE THE SERVICE IS NOT RESPONDING. THE SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE OR YOU MAY NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. How can I get messenger?
I have windows ME.

Ok I have it. How can I let DD use but make sure she doesn't have dodgy emails. She would like her own ID.

can you open different accounts on your messenger, plus are you able to use parental controls, we have MSN premium , £59.99 per year , it works with your own service provider and you get lots of protection , and parental control. but msn premium is separate from your normal service provider , you use your own msn email address / hotmail email address. with this you can set age limits and restrictions on who they can chat to and even restrict downloads through messenger and stuff like that.
we have had msn premium now since 2004. it gets re-newed annually.
oh and its mcfee protection and firewall protection you get and encarta and share photos and lots of other stuff.
im not sure about parental controls on normal messenger and normal msn.
i hope this helps

I'd restart the computer keep pressing F8 until you get the option to start windows in safe mode, when windows loads up in safe mode unistall msn messenger in add and remove programs which is found in control panel. Once you have done that restart the computer normally and download the new version of "msn live messenger", install that and if you are still having probelms make sure your firewall isn't blocking the program access.Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"0

i think there is a problem with AOL and msn messenger , here is a link about it
this was back in 2005 when msn messenger and yahoo messenger joined forces. http://www.ovum.com/go/contents/c,59202 then goto paragraph 4.
i can actually remember my neice saying years ago that some of her freinds with AOL are not allowed or were not permitted to have MSN messenger , i think AOL like you to talk through there messenger service.
im not quite sure if i am correct.
hope this helps a little.

if problem persists, try sticking the XP CD into your PC and click start>run and type "sfc /scannow"0

Pc & MSN now working fine on machine. I unistalled it and then did the MSN messenger download again. This time when I installed MSN it worked fine!
I have given DD her own hotmail email address so she can use messenger with her own ID and warned her not to read any emails as I know my own hotmail address gets 18x rated mails.
I'm going to have a good session on it to see if I can limit the email she receives to those in her address book.

you can set up the junk mail filter to be exclusive so that only people you have in your contacts and allowed senders get to your inbox, everything else goes straight to the junkmail folder, which you can set to delete them immediately. To do this click on options on the top left of the screen, then click on the mail and junkmail link on the left of the screen, select the first option, then work through the page to set everything as you want to.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0

to not get junk email in hotmail just don't sign up for any of them email newsletters when you create a account.
If you do thats how the majority of the junk emails get your email address, by the email newsletter companies selling on your email addresses.Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"0
