My credit card company sold my debt to a debt collector.
My balance on the 20th of June was 7315 pounds. with this crecit card
This company contacted me on the 8th of July and they are asking for 10454.55 this is an increase of 3139.55 is this legal??
I'm not contesting the original debt, but this is pure extortion in my view.
Thanks for your time, any help would be really appreciated

Are you sure they sold it? Because it's different rules if they sold it or if the Devt Collection Agency (DCA) is just acting on behalf of the Credit Card Company.I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)
As of the last count I have cleared [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt.

Ok I will explain
The credit card in question is Barclaycard Visa , I've got it since 4th June 1996, but this one seems to be the second one taken into the account for my partner at the time, but I'm sure it was given to her in 2005, not later than that, but at the end, was charged into my one main card, dated from 1996, as far as I recall, no other agreements were signed.
They sold the debt to HFO services, first time I heard from them was last week on the 8th of July and they are asking fro 10454.55 when the debt at 20th June was 7315
Original term and conditions of the CC, no idea where they are, since 1996 I moved 3 times, last fixed address since may 2000, al my CC dated pre 2005, I mean I didn't get any other credit card since 20050 -
Send them a recorded delivery letter asking for a copy of the original signed consumer credit agreement, when and if you get it post back here. you can find a template letter on this forum .GRADUATED FIRST CLASS WITH HONORS FROM THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS RECOMENDED READ IF BY RUDYARD KIPLING0

Cheers, Wrinkles, will print that letter tomorrow morning, and will send them that, I believe you are talking of the CCA Request template on this site, right? so will let you know what is going on, mean time0 -
Its probably not even enforceable going that far back anyway so they can add what they like, but wont mean they can enforce it ever.0

A debt collector can only add charges if they own the debt, and also only in line with the original agreement. Its worth noting the agreement will state if sold whether a 3rd party can continue to add interest/charges. if not they cannot do it. Read the OFT guidelines about debt charges - http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/consumer_credit/oft664.pdfAlthough no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

This is interesting because I took out a loan with lloyds, my job went tits up, the debt went over to BLS but they added a hell of a lot of interest to the amount I owed. Now they wont answer letters because I'm questioning the CCA, interest etc etc!0

This UK is just full of companies that don't want to play on a level playing field.0
