What's wrong with Admiral car insurance?

Have been looking at car ins quotes for my DH today and Admiral seem to be the cheapest so far, however a quick search on this forum has shown me that a lot of people say to never insure anything with them but then never really say why....so what's wrong with them?

My DH is 21, has 2 years no claims and the car is worth about £1500-£2000 and we will be looking at adding his mum as a named driver because due to him being male and 21 his car insurance premiums are always £2000+ and she brings it down by about £300. Are there likely to be any big problems if we go with Admiral?

A lot of people say they'll never insure with direct line, with more than, with aviva, kwik fit, m&s, tesco... oh wait? I just named most of the big boys

People like to moan, simple as! If your happy with the cover/price, go for it.

One persons bad experience could be very different for another person

Everyone (including me) slates Aviva, yet i just took a policy with them, everything went smoothly, rang C/S to clarify something and the guy was really polite and helpful and took about 30 seconds to get through during a busy time? Its in peoples nature to complain and not give praise

People hate car insurance! So you'll only ever hear negative things.

For what it's worth, I've always been under the impression that Admiral were one of the better ones... they only have UK call centres which makes a huge difference from those who outsource.

Anyway, they're usually cheapest for us young 'uns! (they're much less competitive for oldies)

My daughter (23) is back with Admiral for the second time. We never made a claim with them last time and hope not to this time.... So no advice really but we go with who ever is cheapest each year and I have heard horror stories with several of the bigger ones but I think if Admiral were so bad then they wouldnt still be in business.

Yes. Item on a regional news programme from Cardiff, showed their vast Cardiff call centre. Between their brands Admiral and Elephant they are amongst the largest employers in Wales.
So sometimes you get through to Cardiff and sometimes to Bangalore or Canada.
My limited experience suggests that anything complicated gets put through from Bangalore to either Canada or Cardiff.
Never had any problems after 3 or 4 years with Elephant and Admiral. As someone already said - good premiums for younger drivers.

The problems with insurers crop up if you have to claim or in some cases just contact them to amend things.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Thats interesting, I wonder if their staff do the same as the Aviva Indian call centre staff and pretend they have a British name. It would be quite funny speaking to one of their Indian call centre staff who had assumed the name of Daffyd especially if he pretended he was from Llanddewi Brefi...

Admiral have call centres in Newport, Cardiff and Swansea in wales

ALL of the claims departments are UK based, some customer services/renewals are in Bangalore and Halifax, Canada for very late night shifts but the majority of staff are based in Wales, UK.

Beware - I just got a reasonable online quote with Admiral, went to pay for it and they want to charge me a whopping £4.50 extra to pay by credit card! (debit cards are free). If they weren't the cheapest quote I've had by a mile I'd tell 'em where to go.
