yes, I agree it is sickening, but as we all need money for one thing or another, I'm having to accept money where I can. Also, I will repeat, delivering papers is not classed as a job in the eyes of DWP and JC. When both of them asked me if I was working, and I told them that I deliver papers each morning, they responded by saying that I was unemployed then.

I would gladly give up my benefits if I could get a job.

I just did a search on the DirectGov website which now handles the JC job listings. Can't find any suitable, and anything suitable is too far away. The only ones nearer to home are through slave labour agencies.

i dont belive that for one minute... saying that delivering papaers is NOT classed as a job, anything that you get paid for IS classed as a job....

stop making excuses.... slave labour agencies, still got to pay the min wage... so get off your butt and stop pretending you are ill, i suffer with joint problems, and that has never stopped me getting work or starting my own business, which now employ 7 people ( including me)

did you tell the jc and dwp how much you get for delivering those papers?

you also said you want the extra money to go abroad to work, so you are fit for work...its just that its easier to claim... makes me sick.... when there is genuine people out there who have got a disability or really cant work for medical reasons, who are being told they cant get any finaincial help

I'm sorry but I agree with everyone who thinks that it is sick that you are claiming benefits just because you can because you need the money. I have a friend who cannot walk and also suffers depression but she has been turned down for DLA because she is able to sit at a desk at least - yet she can't GET to work. Then there are people like you who are taking it just becuase it's being offered to you. I seriously hope that the government look into you properly and take that away. I work hard, I pay all my taxes and insurance and everything else yet still get less than you a week and you just get it handed to you!

If you had a genuine problem which meant you couldn't work then I would be understanding but you are blatantly telling us all that you are taking it because it's being offerd to you! Where is your pride and dignity?

    Not by a longshot.

I don't see why not, my other half works remotely for a local company and he started when he was only partway through MCSE, He'd done up to the A+/N+ and got a job, he doesn't even haveto leave home.

Be more positive here, instead of looking at what you can't do why not make the best of what you can do. Everyone is capable of something, if it comes to it you could always sign up to an adult chatline. Also if you can deliver papers you could do something like avon at the same time.

Also have you looked at things like the Open University? If you don't have a degree level qualification you can study via distance learning and get yourself something relevant to the job market.

Why are the people slating the OP doing so? They asked for help? You may think it's sick and may think the system is completely and utterly ridiculous (I think the system is a complete waste of time and it seems no one cares about the genuine people who need help!) HOWEVER is slating them and telling them how sick you think it is going to make them think about it and stop taking their benefits? Highly doubt it! So you're ranting to a person who isn't going to listen if you just seem angry and mean!
Whether or not a post round is seen as a job, and whether or not this person is genuinely needing a scooter and is in need of DLA, in my opinion I think you are still able to do it if you are getting the low rate of DLA! Especially if you use a scooter, and you ARE able to refuse to deliver to certain houses or buildings with a valid reason. I don't know whether it'd be classed as having a job as i'm not sure if they would class having a job as working so many hours a week or earning so much or anything so I wouldn't be able to comment.
I am 18, am female and I am currently studying a BTEC diploma in children's care, learning and development. I am also recieving low rate DLA as I cannot walk around for periods of time and cannot stand for short periods due to nerve damage in my leg as a result of chemotherapy. Even when stating my disability to employers I wasn't able to get a job and was turned down for ALL I applied for. (I applied from the age of 16 until i turned 18) and i started to believe that because I was 'classed' as disabled, they were more put off even though I know some employers have to take on a certian amount of people with disabilities. Even my own college tutor tried to force me to go ice skating when i physically can't do it and she is aware I can't due to my physical issue!
DLA is very hard to qualify for/ to actually recieve, and me and my family have realized that it's not the information you give to the DWP that helps, it's what your doctors say about it in the end! If the doctor (like mine) has nothing to do with your issue and the DWP don't contact the hospital (in my experience anyway!) then they won't enter completely correct and sometimes vital information which may determine if you will eventually recieve the DLA! Nearly 5 months after I had finished my chemotherapy I was still unable to walk properly and needed support when walking at certain times and couldn't (still can't after 4 years) stand up without help if I fall or try to kneel down. I can't physically jump or run either! Anyway, even after that, my doctor told the DWP that my leg wasn't causing me problems because they had no idea of my situation, so i was turned down DLA! Had to get the DWP to send a medical examiner (or whoever they are! haha) and it was HIM that told me it looked and sounded as if I had nerve damage! My mum helped me get referred to a specialist and it turned out I have and I was told it probably wouldn't get better if it hasn't by now. I myself know how hard it is and how frustrating it is when you see other people or hear about people who don't seem to 'deserve' the money they are given by the genuine tax payers and you or a family member are fighting a losing battle, but before knowing ALL of the information behind their story, I do believe myself that you shouldn't judge someone. This poster may genuinely think that the job they do does qualify as a proper job and may not be lying.
One other thing i'd like to add, as someone who doesn't particularly LOOK disabled I get horrible looks if I use my bus pass in order to use a bus, or if I speak about being disabled or getting DLA. Even when I was on a higher rate and had a disabled car badge (weairng a wig due to my chemo) I would get DREADFUL looks off people if my mum parked in a disabled spot! Because you can't see the disability immediately, it doesn't mean that it's not there. You can be classed diabled/get a disabled bus pass if you have a heart condition! Anyway what that's getting at is that it knocked my confidence so much those looks and whispers I got/get! Then because you are so unconfident, especially about having a disability, you are less confident in things like job interviews or college/ uni interviews and in my case, all other aspects of life, all because you think that everyone else thinks you're a complete liar and that you're stealing their money! It knocks you into a pit, because you can't get a job, are still disabled but really WANT to earn money and be off benefits!

I'm not getting at anyone, but basically I just think that even if the information and everything that the poster has given seems as if they are recieving something they shouldn't or are lying or anything along those kind of lines, I don't think people should rant and rave over the internet to them when they know that 1) it won't make a difference to this case and 2) they don't know the WHOLE picture and the extent of disabilities/issues involving this person. Aagain i'm not trying to start an argument, but I deffo agree with the people that say that it is genuinely quite hard to recieve DLA without proof from professional medical staff. I am not saying that this stops a huge load of people from claiming it when they shouldn't be as I have heard so many stories about it! However, I stand by my own opinion and experience as I know that it is hard to get it.
    I believe in karma ;)
I'm 18 and have been with my lovely boyfriend for 3 years :D
I'm fairly new... Pleasseee be nice to me! :o
  • This guy wants to study and get himself to a point where he CAN work and support himself - and all some of you can do is diss him because he qualifies for benefits ???? :naughty:

OP, I know exactly where you're coming from when you mention applying for 100's of jobs - I lost my full time job 12 weeks ago when the main contractor on the building development I worked on went into administration. Despite applying for many jobs in the last 12 weeks, I've had just one interview. There is no work in my sector, and literally hundreds of people applying for every other job that comes along. I plan to go to college part time in September and do a teaching course as I want to use my existing skills in another way.

    To answer your original question...
So you need to be putting aside £1000 a year ... break that down to £20 a week, and look at what you can do/do without to come up with that.

Have a look round on here ... try several small things rather than just one ... and put those IT skills to good use !

Can't help you much more, all the info and ideas you need are dotted around on here.

Good luck with the studies :-)
Google is my friend ..... :j
  • I figured that I'd get this sort of response. A person asks for help, and he/she gets attacked. Guess that's human nature for ya.

Yes, I've noticed, and I am grateful for it.

It's just that there's so many people kicking me in the daddy bags when I'm down, that's it tends to overshadow the good things.

Thank you for sticking up for me. You're another one of the many people who is struggling to get work.

I've gone through this site a great deal and have managed to knock my expenditure down as far as it will go.

£1k a year, knocks down to £83.33 a month. Because I get paid fortnightly and monthly. IB fortnightly, DLA and paper money monthly, I work out my bills etc on a monthly basis.

I know that once I've finished paying off my credit card, that would free up £70pm, it still leaves me needing a bit extra. However, until then, I still need at least £85pm extra on my income.

The shop that I deliver papers for has stopped the bonus scheme for arriving before a certain time, and managing to deliver papers too the correct houses, so my income has gone down from just over £200pm too £162.40 for 28 (that's February) and £179.80 for 31 days.

This is worked out from the minimum wage of £5.80ph for me.
