LG 42" TV, still got sound but black screen!

Options
Hey all,

Not sure if I'm on the right forum so please feel free to point me in the right direction!

My question is to do with my LG TV that I bought just over 4 years ago. I have never had any problems with it but this morning I was sat watching it before work and it just went black and the sound remained. I'm pretty sure there was a "pop" before this happened as well. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it? I've tried turning it on and off, unplugging wires, leaving it for a while etc but no joy!

The model of the TV is 42px4dv-ea.

Like I said before, not sure this is the right place to post this so if it's not please accept my apologies!:)

a specialist site like avforums.com might be able to help in greater depth
  • If your on old fashioned scart plugs, first thing is to go for the scart every time.

Is it black regardless of input (ie DVD settop box etc.)?
How about the onscreen setup menu?

If it is black no matter what then it sounds like the backlight has gone. You'd have to do some googling to see if that is a possible DIY fix or not (instructions and part) and likely cost.

    Plasma's don't have backlit panels

Indeed they don't. Not sure why I assumed LCD. The checks are still worth doing though as they'll confirm if it's the tv itself.

My worry was the phrase "pop", which suggests the power board / caps. As LauraLou1985 has not come back we may never know.

  • Hey thanks for the suggestions guys! :T
Yes kwikbreaks, the screen is black regardless of what input- I tried my sky box and dvd box but nothing seems to work!

I've had good look about but it seems that there's loads of conflicting ideas of what the problem may be. The "pop" was the most worrying part and as I know next to nothing about electrical things I have no idea what to do. I've read on some forums that I should try and remove the back panel and look at the fuses to see if one has blown???? but I'm thinking it may be best to get someone else to do that!:D

it sounds like the internal screen fuse has popped, its cheap to replace, but this is no guarantee its the solution, something caused the fuse to pop, it could well just do it again.

  • Hi marleyboy, I'm thinking of asking my dad or boyfriend to take the back panel off the tv and see if it is the fuse, I'm likely to cause more damage if I do it myself! Fingers crossed that will work, otherwise a new tv may be in order:eek:.

Can you let me know the outcome on your LG TV repair please including repair costs/parts needed etc.

We have exactly the same problem with an LG 50" Plasma for last 3 days, maybe they are all progarammed to self-destruct on the same day!!

Ours is a UK model but we took it to the Philippines and I did take precautions againt the power cuts/power surges which happen a few times a week there as I plugged the trailer socket (supplying the TV, Cable Box and PC) into an Uninterruptable Power Supply to prevent damage to these.... Unfortunately another member of the household chose to plug the trailer socket directly into the mains power socket missing out the UPS.

Thanks and good luck with getting yours fixed.
