What can I grow now?

Hi everyone,

I am new here and really enjoying the ideas here. Myself and my husband were planning on growing our own potatos, carrots and onions, but he still has to organise the bed for it, so due to the time of the year it looks like we missed the boat?
Are there any other varietys of these vegetables I can set at this time of the year? We are big potatoes/veg eaters.

Thanks!

    Hi Jeidi,

    Welcome to MSE :)

You should still be able to sow salads, rocket, spinach, radish, spring onions, beetroot and carrots at the moment and possibly think about making a start on your winter veg.

You should get more help with this on the Greenfingered MoneySaving board so I'll move your thread over there.

Yeap salad leaves can definately be grown now - I put in more lettuce and pak choi at the w/e. Also radish, spring onion, carrots etc. Don't worry if the spring onions take a while, they can be sown in late summer and be harvested in March next year. The cold weather can give them a good flavour.

You could sign up to BBC Dig In too, I've got free seeds for the past two years and some for my mates. Too late for the freebies this year but if you sign up now you will get an email when the site is open, thus ensuring that you get them.
I'm planting beans, peas, kale and carrot now. Good luck.

What type of beans? I thought it would be too late. (Says a very newbie - going by the dates on the packs!) TIA

I always sow a crop of 'tiny pal' mini turnips in August, to pull for winter stews, etc. They are a nice easy variety to grow. Just keep them watered once they are planted out & pull them when they are around golfball size.
