Hi, am asking this on behalf of my mother in law-when she switches on her computer it says there is a missing or corrupt file and she needs to insert the original windows xp set up cd rom. She doesnt have this, can we get one from somewhere or is there any way round it? Thanks for any help

Ask around friends and colleagues. So long as it is an XP disc it should do the trick. If possible get the same version that your MIL has, presumably XP Home. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
You need to find out whether it is XP Home, Professional or Media Centre Edition. Also the make of PC might help.0

Thankyou for your help-I'll get her to ask around for a disc.0

I didn't suggest that you 'ask around'. I wanted to know which disc... and which make....0 -
The other solution is to take out the hard drive and connect it as a slave to another persons PC. When the PC boots up it should recognise there is a problem with the FAT tables and Data on your mother in laws hard drive. It should then effect a repair when you click OH and redo all the FAT tables and security journals.
At least this method has always worked with mine. The other way is to read up on repairing the PC using DOS commands, which can be daunting to say the least.0 -
There should be a sticker somewhere on the computer that tells her what version of Windows she has.0

And you can then go online and download a version of that windows. Note that doing so isn't piracy only so long as you own a legitimate copy of windows. If your mother's PC has no license sticker clearly visible on the outside of it, you should buy a new copy of windows0
