You do have the right to haggle, in that it isn't illegal to do so. However, that doesn't mean that the vendor is obliged to accept the lower offer.

Or even an offer at the shelf price for that matter.

Oh, btw, some geese came into my shop earlier. I tried to kick them out but they told me they had a "right to gaggle".

bet the OP is on here because a shop 'refused' to sell at a discounted price!!!

'Its my right to haggle!' ;)

    Damn.

All the good responses to the OP have already gone. I must try harder.

Personally I would not be posting at 9.58am if I was clearly still p1ssed from the night before.
  • The OP is right - there was publicity about this recently. But no law was introduced (as explained in previous posts). Basically it was a way of generating interest in the economic market and encouraging people to still spend money despite the downturn of almost three years ago. The advice was to get out there and haggle. You feel like you're getting a better price... and the goods are still leaving the shelves.

Thanks. The media interest I vaguely remember must have been only talk about introducing a law. With all the laws New Labour introduced I'm surprised they didn't implement it anyway: it must be as you said, bringing haggling to the forefront and hoping people will haggle more as they spend.

Technically you could haggle for anything. Its what people used to do but now we generally accept the price we see is the price we pay.

In south africa it is vastly different. They'll haggle anything, including their weekly shopping! Could you imagine the check out girls face if she asks you for £30 and you offer £20? :X

I am pleased to say I have haggled at Sainsbury's, and I did get a discount.

I would love to know how Nu Labaaa would have introduced a right to haggle that the retailer had to listen to?

Customer: This price says £29.99, can I have it for £28...
    Retailer: No
Customer: But it is my right to haggle, Nu Labaaa brought it in so can I have it for £28 please?
    Retailer:No
    Customer: Oh but Nu La.....
    Retailer: No
    Customer: Oh ok
