Europcar Hire Italy -credit card ONLY?

I am trying to arrange car hire in Italy with Europcar , for collection in perugia and dropoff in siena...I have noticed that you can ONLY book online with CREDIT card, not debit, or collect and pay in the office, again ONLY , but with two credit cards AND they must also in the name of the MAIN driver..!?
I have NO credit card, and even if i did i would NOT be the main driver, my partner would (she is italian) ...so is it right that she couldn't give my details even if i managed to get a credit card??
..Does anyone have experience of paying in CASH, or with a debit card in the office??
It is actually a real nightmare:D

it says you can use Visa, and Visa debit works when you pick it.0
