car was 2k and ins was 4k, if yopu only 18 do you really need a car that is so expensive, why not buy a cheaper car,
Why would age define what car you "need"? no-one "needs" anything more than a £50 shitter, but people do anyway...

My car was £3100 and i'm 18.. (and yes, fully paid for by me...) I had the money, it was a car I always wanted, it's more reliable than my previous car and it's more economical, why not?

The value of the car makes little difference to insurance if your third party - it's more to do with the risk profile of the cars. i.e. compare the risk profiles of an 18 year old in an Impreza or a 106 to those of an 18 year old in a Volvo...

The difference between my current car and my old one was about £100 on the insurance, and theres over £2,500 difference in their values. Easily would of been possible to get something like a newish Focus and end up paying less on insurance than my old car...

No point going fully comp when your young, either, the excess + the lost NCB will cost more than repairing your car most of the time.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Whenever i've got a quote on it it's always been around £600 more - that, plus a £500+ excess means if I have a crash i'm already a grand down before I bring in the lost NCB into the equation...

I take it this is an 18 year old male? Apparently insurance companies are exempt from rules about equality!

Insurance companies go by statistics. It is nothing to do with equality; it is just that, statistically, young people make more expensive claims than other groups, and young men are more of a risk than young women, on average. Seeing how some young men drive round here, I would raise the age for getting a licence to at least 25.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Wouldn't matter if they did follow that. All that would happen is everyone's insurance would rise massively to cover it. 18 year olds would then be 1K but you'd never get any cheaper!

The fine will be 400 pounds or thereabouts. Given the huge number of ANPR cameras in towns, if your commuting it wouldn't take a lot to get caught and no insurance invariably means no tax or MoT too in the long run so chuck up a couple hundred quid more for them too. Car taken off you and not released until fee paid and insurance on it.

The points to new driver would mean licence revoked, new driving test too.

My lad was given a fixed penalty, £200 and 6 points, cancelled when he produced his insurance certificate, his name didn't show up on the database. Was also going to have his bike impounded til I turned up and my name was on the database.

Try comparison sites but also the ones that are not on these like Direct Line. Fully comp does usually work out cheaper than third party. What size engine is in the Punto? Usually insurance companies don't like anything bigger than a 1.2 engine for new drivers

Sorry, can I just step in.

    Mentioning no names (Read comments)
Who in there right mind would say a stupid thing such as 'How much is the fine for driving without insurance?'

No wondered in the last 12 months my insurance has risen by £100!!!!

And anyone saying such a statement clearly doesn't have insurance themselves, as you'd know that by a driver not having insurance puts every one else whom has insurance price up.

OP I can only say, if you cannot afford the insurance have a look around, paying monthly may help, if not you can't afford the car.

There is currently a offer on with an insurer - I will find out for you, where if you can get your name on a policy with someone who has insurance with them, you get there no claims XX amount of years instantly.

I understand the theory, thanks. Its just a shame for the many young men who are very responsible drivers and pay for the stupid (though admittedly sizeable!) minority.

I'm a 25 year old female and my insurance was only £700 when I was 17 and is pretty much coppers now, so I've benefitted from this system. I still think its a bit unfair!
