  • Hi there

Let's explain one of the ways that people get your details, even if you are extremely careful most of the time.

Lots of people on Facebook put down their correct month and day of birth, as it's nice to receive birthday wishes from your friends and Facebook will remind everybody. You also tend to list the correct location, as you like your friends to know where you are.

Recently, there was a scam going round where people were posting "This is great fun. Everyone should change their status to show where they were born and the year. Put this as your status followed by your place and year of birth". Everyone thinks it's genuine, because it's their friends doing it and none of their friends are nasty people.

With women, they tend to put their maiden names into facebook too and show who their parents were. So you select your target as someone who lists down their parents and where the parents have facebook too. You look up the mum's details and there you have her maiden name.

You make friends with one of your target's friends (most people allow "friends of friends" to see their details) and then run the "place of birth" scam.

So after running the "place of birth" scam, you now have their name, address, date of birth, place of birth and mother's maiden name. You probably have all this information for any number of people, as you made friends with one person but got to look at the details of hundreds of others! No one is any the wiser and you can then steal other peoples bank details to use, go on line to get a new phone and use it to phone 089 numbers with a premium charge to your own bank account. Even if you only manage to get £150 per phone, if you get 100 phones from this scam, you get £15,000 plus the profit from selling the phones on when you've finished.

Companies like CPW have a duty to check the identity of their customers, but if the person has all the right information, what more can they do?
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Then it could be someone you know, you'd be surprised how often it is.

Or, any post gone missing lately ? Taken anything to work and mislaid it ? Had any of those 'charity's come to the door asking for donations via DD ?

It doesn't take much to get someone info, or enough of it to make this work. . .
