benefits affected by daughters apprenticeship

Hi,
I am currently a single Mum receiving Income Support, Child tax credits, child benefit, csa maintenence, housing benefit and council tax benefit. My eldest daughter (17) wants to do an apprenticeship. Does anyone know how this would affect my benefits? Thanks in advance, jennie x

Is it an employment based or college based apprenticeship?

You won't be able to claim Child Benefit (and by extension Child Tax Credit) for your daughter when she is doing an apprenticeship.

Income Support should only be payable in respect of yourself so this won't be affected and neither will Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit. I don't know about child maintenance.
  • Not sure, she hasn't chosen one yet x
  • Does it effect the housing benefit and council tax benefit? x
  • How would it affect benefits if she got a full time job? x

Just to clarify, as Oldernotwiser has mentioned, Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit may be paid for college based apprenticeships but the majority of apprenticeships are employment based. I believe that college based apprenticeships also attract EMA of up to £30 per week.

well council & housing benefit tend to be means tested anyway, so if the amount of money coming into your house changes in anyway you need to let the local authority know anyway to avoid overpayments. people on low incomes can claim these benefits, so you may still qualify for some help, albeit reduced probably once she starts work. if you are claiming Income support, you must be having periodic interviews with a jobcentre adviser, i would contact them to make an appointment as they will be able to advise you further.

ps: how old is your youngest child? the age is changing now so once they reach a certain age (11 i think at the moment, dropping to 7 soon) you will be switched over from income support to jobseekers anyway.
Please be nice to all moneysavers!

The daughter is a none dependant and a none dependant charge may affect the rent and ctb but its income related and its a very small amount, the daughters income has sweet FA to do with her mothers IS if the mother continues to meet the conditions for IS.

edited to add, a few weeks ago someone posted the none dependant ratefor one none dependant as @£7pw for someone earning over £200 pw and most apprenteships dont pay that much at 17.

As an apprentice, she won't be liable for council tax (so you will still have the 25% single adult rebate when she turns 18) and they don't take a deduction for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit.

If she starts a work based apprenticeship, the only benefits you will see reduced are child benefit and child tax credits.

But then she can pay you 'keep' if she is earning.

If she starts work, the deduction they make depends on how much she earns - the rates will be on your local council website.

If she is working, you will lose the 25% single rebate for council tax once she is 18.

If she goes to college, she should receive EMA and you would still receive CTC and CHB for her and your HB and CTB would be unaffected.
