What does it say on your confirmation invoice?

I have just received mine and it says not later than one hour before departure, but we tend to check in 2-2.5 hours beforehand.

Depends if you def want to sit together, if you do and you havent paid for it (I never would) then the earlier the better, If it doesnt matter to you then check your flight details and see what it says

We flew from Stansted with Thomas Cook last June and were almost the first to check in.
We requested window seats but were told that if we hadn't paid for specific seats our seats had been pre-allocated and couldn't be changed.
    We were sat together.

You should have some documentation somewhere that tells you how many hours before your flight departs you should check in.

I think it also depends how far you are travelling to the airport.
I'd rather spend more time in Departures than sitting on the M25 (or wherever) worrying about missing my flight.
