Can I add a 2nd Virgin Media box?

Hi,
I have just had VM installed and would like a 2nd box in another room. I have a cable box in the lounge which is attached to my tv, and the other room has a box in it which has a cable connected to my broadband.
My question is, can I buy a 2nd hand box and use it in the office? I don't need on demand or suchlike, just to watch the channels I already subscribe to. Is this possible? I don't want to pay an extra subscription for the same channels if i can help it.
Cheers

You can only use Cable Boxes supplied by Virgin Media and linked to an active account.
As such it's impossible to buy a second hand one that will work legally, and even the illegal boxes are no longer working in many areas and won't work anywhere for the foreseeable future soon (VM have changed the encryption to a much tougher version in most areas, but put a hold on adding it in new areas during the WC to avoid affecting legitimate customers).
Depending on your package/existing box additional boxes are as little as a fiver a month.0 -
Thanks, I thought that may be the case, but my father-in-law has a box he doesn't use any more and I was hoping I could use it to watch my subscribed channels. Not talking about chipped boxes or anything shady. Just hoping to save £60 a year for something that will get little use. Oh well, shall stick to freeview....0

But it's not his box. VM retain ownership of all the kit and will require him to return it at the end of his contract, if not the penalty charges are heavy. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

What Mac say's is 100% correct,Besides, the boxes are locked off the network when they are disconnected & are useless unless you wanted a large paperweight or doorstop.0 -

I think £5 is good value for an extra box. By your logic you could save even more money by getting rid of virgin altogether.0

The only reason I got VM is because I've just moved house. No BT line which was £125 to install, also got £65 cashback plus £30 referral bonus. Also no aerial so that would have cost another £50. So all in all, I am saving money by having virgin, plus I now have a far better broadband speed than I could have otherwise expected. So I'm only paying about £15 extra a month for Virgin than I would have been paying BT for line rental and broadband, which is easily made up for by the other money I mentioned. But 'another' £5 a month is hard to justify....0
