mine don't have collars they are all chipped.

Before they were chipped they got them when they first went out at about 5-6 months

If you've decided they are to wear collars then I think the sooner they get used to them the better. I'd start off with them wearing them just for a little while (supervised) and then gradually build up until they are not bothered by them.

Please ensure the collars are the break-away type - one of my cats had a serious injury caused by an elasticated collar that he got caught around his shoulder. This also why my 3 cats now don't wear collars at all.

Same here, a lot of cats hate them so we don't bother.

Mine wear safety collars as well as being chipped, as not all chip readers work for all types of chip, and well meaning OAP neighbours do not know about chips - cats without a collar? Oh I'll feed em gushy food & tuna until they gradually move in! They have my phone no on, and 'I AM CHIPPED'
They don't seem to mind them, but they do go through them a some rate! I found the cheapest place for decent safety collars was our local shop, and the cheapest place for engraved tags Ebay (1.99 each I think with free postage)
I have just aquired a new kitty, who I am fostering. She is perhaps 8-9 weeks old, and I have been putting the collar on her, giving her treats and fuss, and removing after a few mins - It hasn't bothered her in the slightest yet, but I suspect she will do backflips at the next stage - leaving it on after the fuss & treats! :p
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Mine's has a collar and chipped also, as he has the safety collars and has a habit of coming home with no collar. I would put one on as soon as you think suitable, and as suggested for a bit at a time until they don't mind them.

Our kittens at 6month continaully remove thiers whilst play fighting so think we will get them chipped at some point before we let them out as the female is tiny still

You could get them chipped at the same time they are neutered - my Vet offers a discount if they are done whilst under GA.

Have to agree with the others - many years ago our cat was found wandering on three legs because it's front leg had got trapped in the safety collar, which hadn't broken.

Get your kittens chipped when they are spayed/neutered - this is invisible but if they do get lost then vets/animal shelters will get them scanned to see who they belong to. You can also use the chip to operate a cat flap which is very useful if they are ill and you want to keep them in or keep other cats out. The new micro chip flaps can be programmed for several different cats - great if one has to stay in because of illness/ops etc.
