Everybody is supposed to only have 1hr, but common practice is that everyone takes 2. So everyone takes the same time for lunch breaks. As I was only on a temp contract they didnt even care to give me a written contract (they are very lazy employers) and I have also just been having 1hr45minutes to 2 hours lunch per day like everyone else.

Now because I asked for my terms and conditions of employment, they have decided instead, to give me specifically a written contract where my lunch hour is cut down to the same as everyone else (1hr) ..no wait everyone else's lunch is 1hr.

yet if I agree to it I am worried that they then have the power to stop me taking the same time as I have previously enjoyed (and what other colleagues are doing).

Im thinking maybe they dont even care and I can continue do do so - but officially I will be breaching the contract and im concerned about doing this.

I was hoping because I had been taking my lunch for all this time, that this 1.45minute to 2hour lunch hour would be part of my verbal contract and something that cannot be changed without my permission.

You have not told me if the extra lunch time is in your time or company's time.

I don't think there is anything dodgy going on here, except that your seem to make this much bigger than it is. You don't sound too well, sorry, I'm not joking, I'm serious. You sound rather paranoid about nothing.

Nobody is trying to do anything to you. Your employers seem to be happy about the status quo, but may change their mind at some point in the future.

The extra lunch time (45mins to 1hours is paid time. The entire lunch time is paid).

I take on board that I may be knee jerk reaction here, but im concerned about signing something that might cost me later on. I want to prevent the possibility that they steal my lunch time from me by saying I willingly agreed by signing the contract.

Now we have the whole story. You don't want them to stop you from skiving, and force you to work all your contracted hours.

It's not them stealing, it's you, and from public money as you work for a quango.
My salary is also largely paid through public funds, and I would be ashamed if I stole 45min of that every day!
    You should be ashamed too.

I am not going to get pulled into the debate about this. Just make an observation. You may wish to reconsider the law as a career. I don't actually know what a lunch break is, and I am still struggling with what "dinner" is :)

Terra, I like your advice but get a grip (meant in the nicest possible way!) :rotfl:

The OP will never be ashamed. He thinks the world owes him a favour, has no morals, an inflated sense of self importance and is, I would go so far as saying narcissistic.

Good luck with the Law degree OP, with an attitude like that, you'll be lucky if you pass the first year! :rotfl:

Have you asked your colleagues what their contract states in terms of lunch? It may be that whilst the contract states and hour, the reality is rather different.

I have actually past the first year via the Open University. This will be my second undergraduate degree. Thanks for your kind, thoughtful words. xXx

Quite a lofty accussation. Just shows your someone who doesnt really know what they are talking about.

You should be ashamed of yourself for how stupid your accusation that I am 'stealing'.

You also have no idea that my contracted hours is 2hours lunch, simply because that has been the verbal contract. But I came here for advice, not to educate you, so consider yourself blocked as you are simply no use here.
