I'm no expert on wireless networks, but I assume you have installed a wireless network card or a USB adaptor in your daughter's PC. Which model is it and did you install any other software?

This may give some more clues to those more knowlegable than me!

  • does the computer only crash when the usb is in? i know some older machines just cant handle usb that well(like my old machine, more than two usb devices and its bye bye machine....)

try using the laptop without the card or even checking to see if you have a PCMIA port to try that instead(credit card looking slot normally with a bit of black plastic in)

Is it a laptop or desktop?

I googled for 'belkin USB wireless adaptor crashes' and it came up with some people having problems, but no solutions.

If it is a desktop, you could try a PCI adaptor card (would require opening up the case though).

I can tell you it's not the memory my PC is only 256mb and it's been running with the Belkin for 3 years now, howver my wireless only works if it is right next to the router. They never answered any of my emails about it so I have to go back to wire one.

    Sorry I can't help further
    Nice to save.
  • the wireless works fine although sporadic, its just the pc crashing doing simple things

  • Is the network secure (encrypted), and is the laptop patched with https://www.windowsupdate.com and AV/anti spyware software?

Another 256mb from https://www.crucial.com with make her laptop run a lot faster, but may not solve your crashing problem.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • its a desktop, avast av,firewall etc......she has tried it again to play sims and it crashed just asking for disc to be inserted.....getting a pain now

I would try a mains powered USB hub, it may not be ablae to draw enough current all the time from the motherboard, my old Win98se machine did it if I plugged a printer in while the usb modem was connected

  • Have you installed anything just prior to it starting to crash? Wireless network card software or something?

If so, try downloading any updated drivers etc, as you may have a dodgy one
