Are BT the only choice for me?

I'm currently on an Orange dongle which connects me to the internet at 53.6 Kbps (not a techie thats just what it says whenI connect) This costs me £14.99 per month. It's just about adequate for emailing and light surfing (this site takes about 20 - 25 seconds to load each page) so not very effective, and it tells me it will take 23hours to download the SKYPE application (so haven't done that)
I've got a BT socket in the house - but haven't had a BT line since I moved in.
BT are quoting me £50 to install the line (reduced from £124.99), then £19.03 for 3 months and £26.03 for the rest of an 18 month contract. This is for broadband 1 which has a call component (I happily live making the few calls I need to on my moby)
When I asked about "line only" they said £124.99 installation and monthly line rental too.
I'm guessing whatever happens you have to go with BT to get a line enabled? So you can't really shop around for cost effective internet can you - or at least until your 18 mth contract is over.
.........or am I missing something??
Thanks for your help

You can get BT to provide your installation and line rental, but there is no requirement to take your broadband from them as well.
Check your LLU options on https://www.samknows.com by doing an exchange search. Broadband is exchange specific, so it's impossible to make general recommendations. No free lunch, and no free laptop
