looking for advice on currency. Is it better to get it in the uk and take it with you or just use the nationwide card in the cashpoint whilst there? which way would give the best value?
Have also got the P.O, c.card to take with me.

Does anyone know if I would be allowed to take in crisps, marmite and tea bags from uk? I don't want to buy them to get them thrown away at the other end! I know I would have to declare them.

Go to Crown Currency Exchange, I used them for $$$, also Tea might be classed as Seeds, My yoghurt I got on the plane, unopened, I asked if I could have it and he said yes

No problem bringing any of these in as long as you declare them (the customs guy will probably just laugh gently at you as they are so used to it then wave you through the shorter queue). As long as things are processed they are generally OK.

You can get Marmite here in some of the bigger Coles, it is branded Our Mate as the Marmite brand is owned by a NZ company (don't bother trying it).

Spottydog I used to love Marmite and didn't know Our Mate were one and the same. I have a jar of Our Mate and it's horrible stuff... but I'm a Vegimite lover now.

Quids in When my mum came to visit us for some reason the bank talked her into bringing US$ travel checks... don't do that. There are lots of 'holes in the wall' everywhere including supermarkets.

Unless you have a crystal ball to predict exchange rates, nobody could tell you!

When I went to Australia last year I changed approximately half beforehand with Crown Currency Exchange and spent about half on my card while there. That way it averages out and you don't really lose wherever the rates go.
  • As far as seeds are concerned - took some flax seeds with me to Oz - declared them and they said they are ok.
    Vegemite is the best :j

The charger from my UK bought bluetooth speaker works fine in my Aussie car so I think they are the same

Personally I hate them both but lots of people on the expats sites say Our Mate is marmite and the british shops sells Our Mate as does the UK section of my local Coles
