looking for advice on currency. Is it better to get it in the uk and take it with you or just use the nationwide card in the cashpoint whilst there? which way would give the best value?
Have also got the P.O, c.card to take with me.
Does anyone know if I would be allowed to take in crisps, marmite and tea bags from uk? I don't want to buy them to get them thrown away at the other end! I know I would have to declare them.

Use your Nationwide card for cash and the PO card for spending.
Even if the ATM in Oz charges you a fee (I believe many do these days) you'll still be quids in.
Don't know about the food issue - but beware of the locally produced 'marmite' in Oz - it's foul stuff. I think they import ours as well so you should be OK. Or learn to like Vegemite - it's actually quite good.
In any case they do sell your foodstuffs in Oz - no need to take them.0 -
Hi, i was allowed to take in things like chocolate, sweets and tunnocks teacakes, caramel wafers etc. They were all pre-packed and still in outside wrapper. The food control guy just laughed when i showed them to him (id have quite alot of stuff) and asked what was wrong with their chocolate. he's obviously never tasted our superior blend!
i'm sure branded stuff is ok as long as it's not fresh fruit, meat etc and definately not homemade. they are strict about it0 -
I doubt that you will be able to take in crisps or even tea bags - they don't want to introduce potato blight or even bugs that could be in the tea bags.
You can buy tea and crisps out there - they're not too expensive and why not try vegemite instead of packing marmite?
You should be able to take in boiled sweets but you cannot take fresh food in such as fruit, meat, etc. I can remember they questioned me over some savoury biscuits that were sealed that I had been given on the plane to eat (these were manufactured and packed in Australia) so I was allowed to keep them.
Check with the embassy to see what you can and can't take and remember when you are given the form on the plane to complete note down everything that you are carrying that could be considered a food item.Semper in faeces profundum variat

I take Marmite and tea bags every time I go for my DD, she even asks for crisps but I refuse to travel the world with them. Vegimite is disgusting if you are a Marmite baby. There is no problem as long as you tick the box on the landing card and every item is still sealed. Marmite can be bought in some stores but is expensive as most foods are at the mo with the poor exchange rate, ie a loaf of bread can be A$5 or more in Sydney.
Go for it.0 -
I have taken jars and jars of marmite, marmalade, choc, Ready Brek and crisps for my friend in Oz - the last time I went out there was a few years ago, the landing guy was looking at the contents - but he let it all through.....just declare it all and have it to hand in case they want to see it and examine it. As long as it hasn't got seeds etc in it then it may be ok.
You can buy some of our stuff over there as it's imported, but very expensive!0 -
I wasn't taking them for myself, but for my friend who misses a certain flavour that he cannot get down under. Thought yorkshire tea would be a nice touch a reminder of home! and marmite just because its better than the veggiemite. thanks all,0

I live in Australia and travel regularly. Australian quarantine is very strict. We have a large Asian community that bring back heaps of their favourite packaged snack foods that after inspection are allowed to keep. You MUST declare as if they find anything you may be fined and most certainly flagged on their computer for further visits.
As a new user I'm not allowed to post a link to AQIS so google Australian Quarantine and you'll find it.
I've declared stuff taken off me, a Malaysian Moon cake as it had a whole egg in the middle (they particularly hate eggs) Also some leaves from a wedding bouquet that had been wash and sanitized, however, they wouldn't let them through the reason being was they could be propagated.
Have a great trip and I wouldn't mind a jar of Marmite myself :rotfl:0 -

Hmmm, yes I agree. Bloody savages those Australians. They don't even have snacks like crisps and fermented yeast extract.
Go and have fun exploring the world and leave strange English customs behind. You might even like Vegemite and TimTams.0 -
But but but Mrs Scruffy
Speaking as an expat if someone came to visit me loaded up with gifts like Rishy Cheese and Onion crisps, a M&S Pork pie (which definitely wouldn't get through AQIS) and Black eyed parched peas... I would be ecstatic, but then it doesn't take much :rotfl: 0 -
