  • fingers of toast with spread make a good snack, wholemeal toast with marmite, cheese spread, homemade jam, peanut butter, just butter verh cheap, quick and nutritious, remember

banana cake recipe, this is nice and can be made with brown sugar

    Makes 1 x 900g loaf
    Preparation time: 30 minutes
    Cooking time: 40-45 minutes
    • 2 ripe bananas (about 400g)
    • 150g softened butter
    • 150g soft brown sugar
    • 80g sultanas
    • 300g plain flour
    • 2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
    • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
    • 100ml vegetable oil
    Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Butter a 900g loaf tin and line the bottom and sides with non-stick baking parchment
Peel and mash the bananas. Put the butter and sugar into a mixing bowl and cream together until light and fluffy. Stir in the bananas and sultanas. Sift together the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda. Add the flour mix and the beaten egg, each about a third at a time, to the banana mix, beating well between each addition. Finally, stir in the oil.
Pour into the loaf tin and bake for 40-45 minutes until well-risen and golden brown and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out on to a wire rack to cool completely.

i think with homemade cakes ect you can control the amount of fat and sugar better, also have you tried nice soft warm bread rolls my kids still love these as snacks'! (14,13, 10 & 9yrs old) crumpets are popular too

I often poach and then gently season a chicken breast and cut it into strips for my DS to have as snacks. Porridge pancakes are really good too, put some oats in the bottom of a flat dish, cover with a tiny layer of milk and blast in the microwave for 30 seconds, and you get a small pancake.
He has chunks of melon too, and loves watermelon especially.

Do I just use less sugar & fat then? would it not affect the recipe?
  • You are all so lucky to have children that will eat. I used to cry because my youngest refused everything and the health visitor used to tell me to just offer him food. If he was hungry he would eat it and she assured me he would not starve himself to death. She was right he is now 23 and over 6'.
  • You could give more cereal type things before bed as a supper as her tea is quite early.

or potato cake-watch additives in bought ones

or even try switching the bigger meal to the evening .

If my lot haven't had substantial amounts in the evening
    ie pasta.pots,rice plus meat/protein & loads veg
-about 5.15 they are all hungry and grumpy the next day.

I find protein fills them up so might give them egg or cheese for breakfast if they seem awful hungry.

Puddings -just really have fruit salad, pancakes, scones, yoghurt, plain cake with fruit on top=like a flan case. I like a nice big meal -if I have to have a pudding i feel it wasn't a substantial enough meal. I up the meal with loads different veg cooked and uncooked.

I give my 16 month old chunks of cheese to snack on and I also give him dry cornflakes, fruit and fibre and our "flakeys" as he calls them in little pots like nibbles
He also loves dipping his fruit in little pots of yogurt keeps him amused for a while but a bitt messy

you can usualy use a little less fat or use lowfat spreads and unrefined brown sugar, definately can cut some of the sugar out if he is not used to sweet things, maybe put some dried fruit in as that is quite sweet

I would give your one year old anything you eat. Get the blender out to liquidise it, tell him its a milkshake, or Mc flurry or something. If he does not like it, the bonus is he will not want to go to Mc donalds when hes older.
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.
