dieting when pregnant??

My sis in law has been the mw this am for her booking in appointment.

She is overweight, she wasnt before, but an influx of kids 4,3 and 11 months have seen her put on, and never shift about 4stone. She is down enough already about her weight but the midwife has told her she should consider slimming worlds programme for pregnant women!!

Now, i could understand if she said eat healthy, try and not to put in too much weight..we can help you by providing info and support etc.... but i thought actively encouraging pregnant women to diet was a no-no? It was when i had my last one 18 months ago.

Anyay has anyone done the slimming world preg diet? if so is it actually encouraging you to loose weight (mw gave the impression it was) or is it simply a support network to encourage you to eat healthily?

  • SW is designed to lose weight through eating healthier (their current Extra Easy Plan recommends one third of your food is fruit/veg then the other two thirds is healthy food (inc pasta and potatoes) and then you can have some treats.

I haven't done the pregnancy plan but I think the aim is for you to maintain your current weight throughout the pregnancy so as the baby grows you are losing weight but not in a way that is detrimental to the baby.

There is a whole thread to SW so it might be worth asking on there to see if anyone is on the pregnancy plan
  • Thanks, will pass the info on, she son her way round for a de-caff now! I think she is simply in shock that the mw has told her to diet whilst pregnant tbh
  • Have just looked and here is the thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2586005

It may be worth asking the creator of the thread

Certainly my MW told me I was ok to diet whilst pregnant thru SW but didn't suggest I do so (I asked the question, but in the end didn't do it). But my youngest is 7 and advice changes [STRIKE]hourly[/STRIKE] all the time.

I was one of those whose metabolism went absolutely crazy during pregnancy and lost weight without trying.....the amount of times my doctor accused me of dieting because of the weight loss was incredible but the reality was I was stuffing my face from morning through till night.

In all, I gained 10lbs with eldest (in the last 3 weeks) and his birth weight was 8lbs.
Middle son, weight gained was 6.5lbs (again the last 3 weeks) and he weighed 7 and a half lbs and youngest, I gained 1 stone and he weighed 6.5lbs (he was not full term) but I also had horrid water retention with him and was borderline pre eclampsic, at 16 weeks pregnant with him, my weight was a stone less than when I had first visited the doctor to have the pregnancy confirmed.

It was great coming out of hospital and the weighing less than when I had got pregnant but then my metabolism would come to an absolute grinding halt and it was a very strict diet to just stay level.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

i expect she may have had it recommended to her for health reasons and to boost confidence/self esteem. i think the diet programme is just more healthy eating and balanced meals added with excersize, it may even help her

I follwed SW right through my preganancy - with the MW ful support.

I lost a pound or two every other week for the first 6 months then started gaining a pound or so every week or so from there on in. I actually finished up (after popping DS2) 21lbs lighter than when I started.

Felt full of energy because I was eating properly - never mind the benefit of losing some weight.

Bubs was an 8 pounder and born at home so a healthy and happy pregnancy all round.
