  • I agree Annie, and you are right, they were 89p. I have purchsed them on occasion as I am the only one in the house who eats stuff like that, and at certain times of the month you just need cake. :D

Yep, all those things that come in twos have gone up, cheesecakes, apple doughnuts etc. Oh well.... I could do with losing a couple of stone!!!

  • Aldi do some gorgeous frozen cheesecakes which are quite easy to slice frozen with a hot sharp knife and actually would be cheaper than a pack of custard slices from Mr S. I will just have to make room in the freezer for one of those instead. Vote with your feet, ladies!! (and your bellies :D)

Frugalista: I would cut the quote short if I knew how to. I have tried deleting some of it but nothing happens.

Kitcaboodle: The recipe looks great but I can't have eggs. Do you think it would work if I just left it out and maybe added a bit more fat? Have just made my second batch of twinks this week. The first lot mysteriously disappeared. I'm going to have a go at the microwave flapjacks and want to really get into the baking but the egg problem is a pain.

Ah, I don't have an Aldi nearby, whereas Mr S is directly opposite my house (dangerous!). Perhaps I'll just give up cake.
HAhahahhahaha, like that's ever going to happen!!!!

I have in the past been known to eat frozen cheesecake whilst waiting for the next slice to defrost in the microwave. Then ofcourse, you can't leave the evidence of a partially eaten one so....

Got to say, I haven't done it for a long long time.

Ofcourse, this isn't a problem for those who live alone as there isn't anyone to find the evidence.

  • Esther - I don't know how they'd work without the egg, I've never tried it. However you could always try just adding a bit more of the coffee to make sure the cookie dough is moist enough. There are probably lots of vegan sites out there that would be able to point you in the right direction of what to do if you can't eat eggs.

I'm egg intolerant myself but I'm OK if they are baked into something like a cake. I can't eat sauces with egg in or solid egg mixtures like quiche though. :(

If you want a yummy egg-free treat you could try egg-free chocolate coated marzipan:

    200 grams of ground almonds
    175 grams of icing sugar
    2 tablespoons whiskey
    2 tablespoons rose water
    1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
One to One & a half bars of decent chocolate. (I use Green & Blacks Maya Gold)

Mix together everything except the chocolate to make the marzipan, if mixture is too moist then leave for an hour or so for some of the liquid to evaporate.

Shape into about thirty small pieces and coat in melted chocolate (you can melt it in the microwave). Leave to set on greaseproof paper or foil. Keep in the fridge as the chocolate doesn't really set properly once melted (I'm sure there is a way to counter this but I'm new to making chocolate things so don't know it!), best made a few days in advance so that the almond flavouring has a chance to infuse through the almonds and sugar.

I made a few batches of these a couple of Christmases ago when I was broke & gave them to people in gold gift boxes I picked up cheaply, they were very well received! :)

Thanks Kitcaboodle. Just fancied that recipe. Have avoided eggs for year and a half now and usually don't bother but as I'm learning to adapt alla OS I thought there may be a way. Know there is so might have a look for something on the vegan sites. I did look the other day, but I spend too long on here to have time to look in other places too. Not sure that baking is money saving though as I just didn't bother buying biscuits most of the time but I have had to make two lots of twinks this week becausee I made them for visitors and they went very fast and a request was made for me to make some more.
